EVA Air is a Taiwan-based passenger airline established by Evergreen Group founder Chang Yung-fa in 1989. It began commercial flights on 1 July 1991 and developed an international network spanning Asia, Oceania, Europe and North America.[1]
Establishment and fleet investment
The new airline extended the Evergreen business into air transport. In October 1989 it signed an agreement for 26 aircraft with Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, committing to a substantial fleet before its first passenger service. EVA’s corporate chronology distinguishes its April 1989 incorporation from the start of flying in July 1991.[1][2]
Premium economy development
EVA introduced Evergreen Deluxe Class in 1992, placing a distinct passenger product between economy and business class. The initial design offered a 38-inch seat pitch and personal television screens. The airline subsequently developed several generations of the product as its fleet and cabin standards evolved. This intermediate cabin became an enduring part of EVA’s passenger service rather than a temporary promotional offering.[3]
International partnerships
EVA joined Star Alliance on 18 June 2013. Membership connected its own services with a wider international network and reciprocal passenger benefits. EVA also works with UNI Air, including on services to mainland Chinese cities. These relationships supplement the destinations served by EVA’s own aircraft and are distinct from the airline’s directly operated route network.[1]
Cabin renewal
In February 2025 EVA announced a fourth generation of premium economy seating. The announced layout contained 28 seats in a two-three-two arrangement, with headrest privacy panels, reading lights and additional storage. Aisle seats included an armrest intended to assist wheelchair transfers. The redesign illustrates the continued development of a cabin category associated with EVA since its early international expansion.[3]
