Garuda Indonesia is Indonesia’s national passenger airline, operating domestic and international services. Its history is closely connected with the creation of an Indonesian national airline after independence, while its modern network includes participation in SkyTeam.[1][2]
Origins of the national airline
Garuda’s official history distinguishes several events in 1949. Indonesian Airways operated in Burma using aircraft associated with the Indonesian Air Force. Separately, the Dutch–Indonesian settlement led to the transfer of the KLM-IIB airline business. Negotiations with KLM in December concerned the establishment of a national Indonesian airline, for which President Soekarno selected the Garuda Indonesian Airways name.[3]
Early operations
On 28 December 1949, Dakota aircraft flew from Jakarta’s Kemayoran airport to Yogyakarta to bring President Soekarno back to Jakarta. Garuda identifies this flight with the start of its own operations. KLM supplied staff during the transition and helped train Indonesian personnel. Garuda Indonesian Airways N.V. was incorporated on 31 March 1950 as a joint venture, and Indonesia became the majority shareholder in 1954.[3][1]
Domestic and international role
Garuda developed as a flag carrier serving international, regional and domestic markets. Its network links Indonesian destinations with overseas services, giving it a role both within the archipelago and in international travel. The distinction between the early Indonesian Airways activity and the later Garuda corporate business explains why the airline’s historical milestones include both 1949 and 1950.[1][3]
SkyTeam membership
Garuda joined SkyTeam on 5 March 2014, becoming the alliance’s twentieth member and the first Indonesian airline to join. Its accession added Jakarta as an alliance gateway and connected Garuda passengers with partner networks beyond its own destinations. Membership also integrated reciprocal passenger benefits and strengthened the alliance’s coverage in Southeast Asia.[4][2]
