Kenya Airways is Kenya’s national passenger airline, operating from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Established in 1977, it developed an African network with intercontinental services and participates in the SkyTeam alliance.[1][2]
Nairobi hub
Kenya Airways grew from its 1977 beginnings into an airline connecting African destinations with markets beyond the continent. Its Nairobi operation provides the central connecting point for that network. The airline’s anniversary account identifies Terminal 1A at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as its hub facility, linking the business’s domestic base with its wider international role.[1]
SkyTeam cooperation
Kenya Airways began its relationship with SkyTeam in 2007 and became a full member in 2010. The change formed part of the alliance’s tenth-anniversary expansion, when associate members including Kenya Airways and Air Europa moved to full membership. This distinction explains the use of both years in accounts of the airline’s alliance history.[2][3]
Dreamliner introduction
Boeing delivered Kenya Airways’ first 787 on 4 April 2014. The aircraft departed Everett for a nonstop delivery flight to Nairobi. The new type was intended to become a central part of the airline’s long-haul fleet, offering additional range and improved operating efficiency. The first delivery formed part of an initial programme for nine Dreamliners and the wider Project Mawingu fleet-development plan.[4]
Nonstop New York service
Kenya Airways inaugurated nonstop flights between Nairobi and New York on 28 October 2018. The route created a direct link between East Africa and the United States, supplementing journeys that previously required connections through other hubs. The airline marked five years of the service in 2023, identifying it as a significant step in its intercontinental network development.[5]
