Malaysia Airlines is Malaysia’s national passenger airline, connecting domestic and international destinations through its Kuala Lumpur hub. It belongs to Malaysia Aviation Group and participates in the oneworld alliance.[1][2]
Origins and national airline
Malayan Airways Limited was incorporated in 1937 and began commercial services in May 1947. Its early route connected Singapore with Penang through Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. The company became Malaysian Airways in 1963, then Malaysia–Singapore Airlines in 1966. The two governments subsequently ended their shared airline arrangement, leading to separate Malaysian and Singaporean carriers. Malaysian Airline System was incorporated in 1971 and began the next phase of operations in 1972.[3]
Fleet development
Widebody aircraft became important to the airline’s international expansion. Malaysia Aviation Group records the arrival of its first DC-10-30 in 1976 and first A300B4 in 1979. A further generation of renewal included the first A350 in 2017.[3]
The group’s first A330-900 reached Kuala Lumpur on 29 November 2024. Registered 9M-MNG and powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, it formed part of a programme to modernise the airline’s widebody operations. The aircraft supplemented a long association with the earlier A330, which had entered Malaysia Airlines service in 1995.[1][4]
Restructuring
The airline’s corporate history includes a substantial restructuring in 2014–2015. Malaysian Airline System was delisted in December 2014. Malaysia Aviation Group was formed in May 2015, and Malaysia Airlines Berhad commenced full airline operations that September, following the end of the earlier company’s operations.[3]
Alliance and passenger connections
Malaysia Airlines joined oneworld on 1 February 2013. Membership extended connections and reciprocal frequent-flyer benefits beyond its own flights. Its Enrich loyalty programme participates in the alliance’s tier system, allowing eligible members to receive benefits when travelling with partner airlines. Kuala Lumpur provides the airline’s principal connecting point between Malaysian destinations and its international network.[2]
