Royal Air Maroc is Morocco’s national passenger airline, connecting the country with destinations in Africa and other regions through its Casablanca base. The airline adopted its present name in 1957 and joined oneworld in 2020.[1][2]
Origins
Air Atlas and Air Maroc merged in 1953 into the Compagnie Chérifienne de Transport Aérien. The Moroccan state granted that company a concession for domestic and international air transport. On 28 June 1957 it became the national airline under the Royal Air Maroc name. The following year it established a professional training centre with technical workshops, supporting the development of its own aviation workforce.[1]
Casablanca network
Royal Air Maroc’s network combines travel to and from Morocco with connecting journeys through Casablanca. Its African services link Moroccan airports with cities south of the Sahara, while onward flights connect with Europe and other regions. The company identifies tourism, economic exchanges and links with Moroccan communities overseas as important parts of its role.[1]
Dreamliner development
The airline’s first Boeing 787 was delivered on 31 December 2014 and arrived in Morocco at the beginning of January 2015. The aircraft introduced a newer widebody generation intended to improve its long-haul capability. A first stretched 787-9 followed in December 2018, adding a second member of the Dreamliner family to the fleet alongside the original 787-8.[3][4]
oneworld membership
Royal Air Maroc became a full oneworld member on 1 April 2020, the alliance’s first based in Africa. Regional subsidiary Royal Air Maroc Express also entered as an affiliate. Membership extended the Safar Flyer programme’s earning and redemption options across partner airlines and introduced reciprocal benefits for eligible frequent travellers. The entry followed an implementation programme announced after the airline was invited to join in December 2018.[2][5]
