Aircraft manufacturers design and produce aircraft, coordinating the engineering, construction and testing needed to turn a proposed design into an operational product. Their work can involve extensive supplier networks rather than making every component within one company. Civil aircraft manufacture also requires regulatory approval of the design and production arrangements.[1][2]
Design and certification
In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration distinguishes approval of an aircraft design from approval of its production. A type certificate establishes that a design complies with the applicable standards. The applicant supplies plans, analyses, inspections and tests to demonstrate compliance, with the regulator reviewing the evidence. This is a staged engineering process rather than an approval based solely on an aircraft completing its first flight.[2]
Production and suppliers
A production certificate addresses the ability to build products consistently to an approved design. It involves the manufacturer's quality system and supplier oversight. Actual manufacturing can be geographically distributed: Airbus, for example, receives components from partner and supplier organisations before final assembly at its aircraft plants. The final assembly site is therefore one location within a larger industrial network, not necessarily the origin of all major structures and systems.[2][1]
Specialist manufacturers
Aircraft, engines and propellers are distinct categories within civil aviation's design-approval system. Equipment and replacement parts can also follow specific approval routes, including technical standard orders and parts manufacturer approvals. As a result, identifying an aircraft's manufacturer does not identify the maker of every installed component. A useful description separates the complete aircraft, its powerplants and its specialised equipment rather than treating all of them as a single product from one supplier.[3]
Service life and changes
Manufacturing history continues to matter after delivery. Civil aviation oversight includes airworthiness information, service-difficulty reporting and airworthiness directives, while changes to approved designs can require amended or supplemental approvals. These mechanisms distinguish original manufacture from subsequent modification and continued operation. An aircraft can remain in use after its original production programme ends, so an account of a manufacturer should distinguish aircraft being built, historical products and the installed fleet that still requires technical support.[4][3]
