Airbus A320neo family

The Airbus A320neo family is the re-engined generation of the Airbus A320 family of twin-engine narrow-body airliners. The name means new engine option. It comprises the A319neo, A320neo and A321neo airframes, together with the longer-range A321LR and A321XLR developments and Airbus Corporate Jet derivatives. The generation retains the A320 family's fuselage, fly-by-wire controls and cockpit commonality while adding new engines, Sharklet wingtip devices and incremental aerodynamic, systems and cabin changes.[1][2]

Development

Airbus launched the A320neo family on 1 December 2010. Rather than replace the A320 with a clean-sheet aircraft, it combined new-generation engines and aerodynamic improvements with the established A319, A320 and A321 platform. The first production work began with an engine-pylon component in Toulouse in 2012.[2][3]

The A320neo powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines received joint European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and US Federal Aviation Administration certification on 24 November 2015. Airbus delivered the first aircraft to Lufthansa on 20 January 2016. The alternative CFM International LEAP-1A installation received joint EASA and FAA certification on 31 May 2016.[4][5][6]

The A321neo was certified in December 2016 and first delivered to Virgin America in April 2017. The A319neo with LEAP-1A engines received joint certification in December 2018. Airbus subsequently developed the A321LR and A321XLR to extend the A321neo's range and mission flexibility.[2][7]

Design and commonality

The neo family uses the A320 family's six-abreast cabin cross-section, underfloor cargo system, digital fly-by-wire flight controls and common cockpit philosophy. Common systems and handling characteristics allow airlines to operate several family members within a shared training, maintenance and spares framework, subject to regulator and operator requirements.[2]

Large Sharklets are standard. Airbus attributes the generation's lower fuel consumption principally to the engines, wingtip devices and continuing cabin and aerodynamic improvements. Compared with the previous generation, Airbus reports up to 20 per cent lower fuel burn and carbon-dioxide emissions per seat and a 50 per cent smaller noise footprint; these are manufacturer comparison figures and depend on variant, layout and mission.[2][1]

The cabin can be configured for network, low-cost and long-range service. A320neo-family aircraft may use bulk-loaded holds or, where specified, containerised lower-deck cargo. Later A321neo aircraft can incorporate Airbus's Airspace cabin, larger overhead bins and revised door arrangements that support a wider range of seating layouts.[2]

Engines

Customers can select either the CFM International LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM geared turbofan. Both installations were separately flight-tested and certified on the A319neo, A320neo and A321neo. Engine choice affects the nacelle, pylon, maintenance programme and some performance data, but does not change the basic airframe designation.[8][6]

The PW1100G-JM was the first engine option to enter service, on Lufthansa's initial A320neo. The LEAP-1A followed into airline service later in 2016. Operators should use the applicable aircraft flight manual, engine manuals and regulatory directives for individual limits and continuing-airworthiness requirements.[5][6]

All three basic fuselage lengths have a published wingspan of 35.80 m (117 ft 5 in) and height of 11.76 m (38 ft 7 in). Figures are Airbus planning data; certified weights, usable range and seating depend on the particular sub-variant and customer configuration.[2]

A319neo

The A319neo is the shortest member. It serves lower-demand routes and forms the basis of the ACJ319neo corporate aircraft. Its smaller order base contrasts with the much larger A320neo and A321neo programmes, but it retains the family's two engine choices and operational commonality.[7][9]

A320neo

The A320neo is the baseline member and the first to enter service. It generally replaces or supplements A320ceo aircraft on short- and medium-haul routes while retaining the same fuselage length.[5][2]

A321neo, A321LR and A321XLR

The A321neo is the longest member. The A321LR uses additional centre tanks and a higher weight option for missions of up to 4,000 nmi (7,400 km). The A321XLR adds a permanent rear centre tank and a maximum take-off weight of 101 t; Airbus publishes a range of up to 4,700 nmi (8,700 km). The XLR received EASA and FAA approval with LEAP-1A engines in 2024 and with PW1100G engines in 2025.[2]

Production

A320neo-family aircraft are assembled within Airbus's global A320 production system. As of June 2026, Airbus identified final assembly in Toulouse, Hamburg, Tianjin and Mobile. The mix has increasingly shifted towards the A321neo, which represented about 72 per cent of the total A320-family backlog at the end of May 2026.[2]

Airbus reported 12,063 firm A320neo-family orders from 153 customers and 4,508 deliveries through 31 May 2026. Because orders, cancellations, conversions and deliveries change monthly, those numbers are a dated snapshot rather than permanent totals.[2][9]

Operators

Lufthansa was the first operator of the A320neo. Airbus's June 2026 customer list records orders from network airlines, low-cost carriers, leasing companies and corporate-aircraft customers across all regions. Large identified customers include IndiGo, Wizz Air, AirAsia, easyJet, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines and several major lessors; an order customer is not necessarily the current operator of every delivered airframe.[5][9]

The first A321neo was delivered to Virgin America in 2017, the first A321LR to Arkia in 2018 and the first corporate ACJ320neo in 2019. Fleet quantities, registrations and operating status should be sourced from current airline or regulator data rather than derived from the order book.[2]

Programme significance

The neo programme allowed Airbus to extend the A320 platform into higher-capacity and longer-range missions without changing its basic cabin cross-section or cockpit family. By the end of May 2026, the neo backlog alone exceeded the number of neo aircraft already delivered, with the A321neo accounting for most outstanding A320-family orders.[2]
