Airbus A321neo

The Airbus A321neo is the largest standard-fuselage member of the Airbus A320neo family. It combines the 44.51-metre A321 airframe with CFM International LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines, Sharklet wingtip devices and revised cabin options. The type entered service in 2017 and has developed into standard-range, Airbus Cabin Flex and A321LR configurations; the more extensively modified A321XLR is covered separately.[1][2]

Development

Airbus launched the A320neo family in December 2010 as a new-engine evolution of the A320 family. The A321neo retained the A321's basic fuselage and cockpit commonality while adding new-generation engines, Sharklets and aerodynamic and systems refinements. It became the largest of the three original neo sizes, above the A319neo and A320neo.[1][3]

The first A321neo, D-AVXB, made its maiden flight from Hamburg on 9 February 2016. The LEAP-1A-powered aircraft flew for five hours and 29 minutes and joined a partial test campaign intended to validate handling, performance and systems changes from the new installation.[4]

The Pratt & Whitney-powered A321-271N received joint EASA and FAA type certification on 15 December 2016 after a programme of more than 350 flight hours and 130 flights. EASA certified the LEAP-powered A321-251N on 1 March 2017; related -253N, -272N and later subvariants followed.[5][6][2]

Airbus delivered the first production A321neo to Virgin America at Hamburg on 20 April 2017. The aircraft used LEAP-1A engines, carried 185 seats in three classes and was scheduled to enter service on 31 May 2017.[7]

Design

The A321neo shares the A320 family's digital fly-by-wire architecture, side-stick controls and common flight deck. Airbus treats the A318, A319, A320 and A321 as a common type-rating family, although operators must still meet the applicable differences-training and regulatory requirements.[1]

At 44.51 metres long, the A321neo is 6.94 metres longer than the A320neo. The standard neo wing spans 35.80 metres with Sharklets. The extended fuselage provides greater cabin and underfloor volume but also makes rotation geometry, weight distribution and airport stand compatibility more significant than on the shorter family members.[3][8]

Airbus publishes a typical two-class capacity of 180–220 passengers and a certified maximum of 244 in an approved high-density layout. Actual capacity depends on exits, seats, galleys, lavatories and operator certification; the maximum is not a typical airline configuration.[1][3]

Airbus Cabin Flex

Airbus Cabin Flex (ACF) changed the emergency-exit and door arrangement to support more flexible layouts. The most visible differences are removal of the second door pair ahead of the wing, the addition of overwing exits and a revised rear fuselage section. Airbus completed the first ACF aircraft in January 2018 and planned the arrangement to become the production standard around 2020.[9]

Exit activation is configuration-dependent. Some operators deactivate one or more door or overwing-exit positions when their approved seating capacity does not require every exit. This means the visible number of operating doors is not by itself a reliable way to identify the exact certified subvariant.

Engines and certified models

The A321neo offers two engine families. The detailed EASA model suffix identifies both the installation and, for later aircraft, the ACF or long-range production standard.[2]

The final letter N identifies a new-engine-option model. The NX suffix is used for the ACF-based set of models certified from March 2018. Airline shorthand such as “A321neo” does not reveal the engine manufacturer; the full certified model or airframe record is required.[2]

Variants

Standard A321neo

The initial A321neo used the conventional A321 door arrangement and was certified in PW1100G-JM and LEAP-1A forms. Airbus gives the standard aircraft a range of approximately 3,500 nautical miles, subject to payload, weights and operating conditions.[1]

A321neo ACF

ACF is a production configuration rather than a separate marketing family. It supports revised exit layouts and up to 244 passengers in a certified high-density arrangement. EASA identifies the ACF-based aircraft through the NX model suffixes.[9][2]

A321LR

The A321LR is an ACF-based long-range configuration. Airbus introduced a 97-tonne maximum take-off-weight option and provision for a third additional centre tank, supporting a published range of up to 4,000 nautical miles. Arkia accepted the first A321LR in November 2018.[9][10]

The LR designation describes an approved weight and fuel configuration, not a unique fuselage length. An individual aircraft's fitted tanks, weights and operational approvals should be checked rather than inferred from an airline's marketing name.

A321XLR

The A321XLR extends the concept with a new rear centre tank, landing-gear and high-lift changes and a published range of up to 4,700 nautical miles. It has separate EASA model designations A321-253NY and A321-271NY and is treated as a distinct aviation.wiki article.[1][2]

Published range is a planning reference, not a guarantee for every payload and weather condition. Airline seating, optional fuel tanks, engine selection, certified weight and reserves materially affect usable range.[1][9][8]

Production

A321neo final assembly forms part of Airbus's global A320-family network. By June 2026 Airbus operated ten family final-assembly lines across Hamburg, Toulouse, Mobile and Tianjin, all capable of assembling the A321. The network comprised four lines at Hamburg and two at each of the other three sites.[11]

At the end of May 2026, Airbus reported an A320-family backlog of 7,499 aircraft, including 5,615 A321neos. This is a backlog figure, not the cumulative number ordered or delivered, and should not be added to delivery totals.[11]

The first Tianjin-assembled A321neo was delivered to Juneyao Air in March 2023. Its 207-seat, two-class layout and Pratt & Whitney engines illustrate the degree to which seating and powerplant choices vary between customers.[12]

Operational use

The A321neo is used on short-haul, medium-haul and, in LR form, transatlantic and other long, thin routes. Operators range from low-cost airlines using high-density cabins to network carriers fitting lie-flat premium seats. Aircraft type alone therefore does not establish seating capacity, route range or cabin standard.

The type's greater capacity relative to the A320neo lets airlines add seats without moving to a widebody, while cockpit and maintenance commonality supports mixed A320-family fleets. The LR configuration further allows some routes previously associated with smaller widebodies, but payload and seasonal wind constraints remain route-specific.[1][10]
