Boeing 777X

The Boeing 777X is a family of large, long-range widebody twin-engine aircraft under development by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Derived from the Boeing 777, it combines a new carbon-fibre composite wing with folding tips, General Electric GE9X engines, a revised flight deck and a wider cabin interior. The family comprises the 777-9, 777-8 passenger aircraft and 777-8 Freighter. As of August 2026, none had entered commercial service; Boeing was targeting the first 777-9 delivery in 2027.[1][2]

Development

Boeing launched the 777X at the Dubai Airshow in November 2013 with 259 commitments from four customers. The programme retained the 777 fuselage architecture and type-family concept while introducing a larger composite wing and technologies developed for the 787. Boeing built a dedicated Composite Wing Center at Everett, Washington, and began production work in 2017.[3][4]

The first 777-9 rolled out in March 2019. It completed its first flight on 25 January 2020, flying from Paine Field at Everett to Boeing Field in Seattle. Four dedicated 777-9 test aircraft formed the initial flight-test fleet, later supplemented by production aircraft used for certification and customer-system testing.[4][5][6]

The planned service date moved repeatedly as Boeing addressed certification work, programme findings, engine issues, the COVID-19 disruption, supply-chain constraints and the 2024 machinists' strike. These dates are programme forecasts rather than regulatory approvals. In July 2026 Boeing said about half of planned certification testing was complete after roughly 1,700 flights and more than 4,800 flight hours, with the first 777-9 delivery targeted for 2027.[2][7]

The GE9X engine obtained its separate FAA engine type certificate in September 2020. That approval does not certify the complete 777X aircraft; airframe certification, production approval and each aircraft's airworthiness documentation remain distinct regulatory steps.[8][9]

Design

Wing and folding tips

The 777X has a carbon-fibre composite wing with an in-flight span of 71.8 metres. Each tip folds upward on the ground, reducing the span to 64.8 metres. The arrangement gives the wing a larger aerodynamic span in flight while retaining Code E gate and taxiway compatibility broadly comparable with the 777-300ER.[10][11]

The tips are extended and locked before take-off and folded after landing. The folding section is outside the primary fuel-carrying wing and has dedicated indication, locking and control logic. It should not be confused with the fixed raked tips of the 777-300ER.

The main landing gear retains six-wheel trucks but adds automatic aft-axle steering. Steering the rear axle reduces tyre scrub and improves manoeuvrability during tight ground turns. The 777-9 is longer than the 777-300ER, making ground geometry and tail-clearance protection important design considerations.[10]

Engines

All announced 777X variants use General Electric GE9X turbofans. The GE9X-105B1A installation has a 134-inch fan and a Boeing-equivalent thrust rating of 105,000 pounds-force. GE uses composite fan blades and case components, ceramic-matrix composites in hot-section applications and a high-pressure-ratio core.[10][12]

During development a GE9X test engine produced 134,300 pounds-force, recognised as a commercial-engine test thrust record. That test value is not the aircraft's normal certified take-off rating. The engine received FAA Part 33 certification in September 2020 after a programme involving nine test engines.[13][8]

Flight deck and cabin

The flight deck develops the 777 layout and incorporates large-format displays, updated avionics and systems functions influenced by the 787. Boeing designed the family for operational commonality with existing 777s, although final training and differences requirements depend on regulatory and operator approval.

The cabin has reshaped sidewalls that provide additional interior width, larger windows and bins, LED lighting, a lower design cabin altitude, increased humidity capability and turbulence-mitigation functions. Published seat counts are representative planning layouts, not fixed certified configurations.[11][1]

Variants

777-9

The 777-9 is the first variant in flight test and is planned to enter service first. It is 76.7 metres long, has a published two-class capacity of 375 to 450 seats and a range of up to 8,000 nautical miles. Its published maximum take-off weight is 351,530 kilograms.[1]

The aircraft is intended for high-capacity long-haul routes and as a successor to large 777-300ER subfleets. Lufthansa, Emirates and other customers have production aircraft in various stages of completion, but a built or customer-painted airframe is not an airline delivery until acceptance and airworthiness processes are complete.[6]

777-8

The 777-8 passenger aircraft is shorter than the 777-9 at 70.9 metres. Boeing publishes a two-class capacity of 350 to 425 seats, a range of up to 9,500 nautical miles and a maximum take-off weight of 365,140 kilograms. Its schedule follows the 777-9 and 777-8 Freighter development work.[1][10]

777-8 Freighter

Boeing launched the 777-8 Freighter in January 2022 with Qatar Airways as launch customer. The freighter uses 777X wing, engine and flight-deck technology with a main-deck cargo system and large cargo door. Boeing publishes a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes and a range of 5,000 nautical miles with a 110-tonne payload.[14][1]

Assembly of the first 777-8 Freighter had reached wing-body join and systems installation by March 2026. This manufacturing milestone did not constitute first flight, certification or delivery.[15]

BBJ 777X

Boeing Business Jets markets VIP versions based on the 777-8 and 777-9. Their very-long-range figures assume a small passenger complement and specialist completion; they are not representative of airline payload and seating.[16]

These are manufacturer planning figures for aircraft still in development. Certification, airline configuration and later weight options may change individual values. Operational range also depends on payload, reserves, weather and airport limits.[1][10]

Orders and customers

By May 2026 customers had ordered more than 620 777X-family aircraft. Announced customers include Emirates, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Etihad Airways, Korean Air and International Airlines Group carriers, alongside freighter customers.[6]

Order announcements require careful interpretation. A headline total may combine firm orders, conversions, options and purchase rights; only firm orders recorded in Boeing's current orders-and-deliveries data belong in a firm backlog count. No 777X deliveries had occurred by August 2026.[1][7]
