The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engine military heavy bomber and a principal aircraft of RAF Bomber Command during the final three years of the Second World War. Designed by Roy Chadwick's team, it grew from attempts to remedy the shortcomings of the twin-engine Avro Manchester.[1]
From Manchester to Lancaster
Replacing the Manchester's two Vulture engines with four Merlins transformed the design. The Lancaster prototype first flew in January 1941. Its development retained elements of the earlier bomber while providing the power and performance needed for a much more successful operational aircraft.[1][2]
Manufacturing required a large industrial network. Six major companies built 7,377 Lancasters at ten factories on two continents. Behind each operational aircraft stood extensive work in component production, assembly, maintenance and crew training.[1]
Bomber Command operations
The Lancaster's first operational sortie was a minelaying mission flown by No. 44 Squadron on the night of 3–4 March 1942. Minelaying remained one of the less visible elements of the bomber offensive, threatening shipping and forcing Germany to devote resources to keeping sea routes open.[2]
Lancasters subsequently carried much of Bomber Command's night offensive against Germany. A normal crew consisted of seven men, who endured long flights, cold, enemy fighters and antiaircraft fire. The aircraft's service history is inseparable from the heavy losses suffered by bomber crews.[1]
Special weapons
A long, unobstructed bomb bay allowed the Lancaster to carry unusually large weapons. Specially modified aircraft of No. 617 Squadron delivered Barnes Wallis's bouncing weapon during the dam raids. Other modified Lancasters carried very heavy bombs, culminating in the 22,000-pound Grand Slam. These missions required changes to the aircraft rather than representing the load of every standard bomber.[2]
