The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was an American four-engine military heavy bomber. It became closely associated with the U.S. Army Air Forces' daylight offensive over Europe, where it operated alongside the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. A disputed investment
Boeing unveiled its Model 299 in 1935. Its four-engine arrangement offered the Army a much greater long-distance capability than contemporary twin-engine bombers, but also carried a higher price. High-altitude combat
Turbosupercharged engines enabled the B-17 to operate with a combat load at high altitude. Defensive machine guns covered approaches to the aircraft, while the bomber's role required crews to navigate, maintain formation and aim their bombs under fighter and antiaircraft attack. Wartime production and service
Although the B-17 served in multiple combat theatres, the European campaign dominated its wartime identity. Demand outgrew Boeing's factories: Douglas and Lockheed's Vega organisation also manufactured Flying Fortresses.
