British Airways Concorde fleet
The British Airways Concorde fleet comprised seven production Concorde supersonic airliners operated from 1976 to 2003. All were British-built Type 1 variant 102 aircraft and carried registrations in the G-BOA* sequence. The fleet was based at London Heathrow and was used primarily for premium long-haul services, most notably between London and New York.[1][2]
Scope
This page covers the seven production aircraft used in British Airways passenger service. It does not count British prototype G-BSST, pre-production G-AXDN or development aircraft G-BBDG as members of the operational fleet. British Airways acquired G-BBDG for use as a source of spares, but it did not carry fare-paying passengers as part of the seven-aircraft operating fleet.[2]
The aircraft were owned and operated within a government-supported programme during the fleet's early years. British Airways became the owner and operator of the UK Concorde fleet in 1984, before the airline's privatisation was completed in 1987.[3][4]

The production number is the commonly used Concorde airframe sequence. CAA registration records use longer manufacturer serial-number forms such as 100-006 for G-BOAA and 100-016 for G-BOAF. A registration, production number and CAA serial number should therefore be stored as distinct fields rather than treated as interchangeable identifiers.[5][2]
All seven airframes survive, but none is airworthy. “Preserved” describes the physical survival of an aircraft and does not imply that it holds a certificate of airworthiness or could return to flight. Access also varies: G-BOAB remains at Heathrow, while the museum housing G-BOAE states that its Concorde tours are closed until further notice.[1][6]
Entry into service
British Airways' first commercial Concorde service was BA300 from London Heathrow to Bahrain on 21 January 1976, operated by G-BOAA. Air France began its own commercial Concorde operation the same day. British Airways' seven aircraft subsequently made just under 50,000 flights and carried more than 2.5 million passengers at supersonic speed.[1][7]
The New York route became the fleet's principal scheduled operation after regulatory approval allowed service to John F. Kennedy International Airport. A typical London–New York sector took a little under three and a half hours, compared with roughly eight hours for a subsonic service at the time. British Airways published a 100-seat layout, with 40 seats in the forward cabin and 60 aft.[1]
Scheduled and seasonal services also linked London with Washington Dulles, Barbados and, for a period, Singapore via Bahrain. The fleet additionally operated charters, demonstration flights and special round-the-world journeys. Route availability was limited by range, airport noise restrictions and prohibitions on routine supersonic flight over populated land, so a destination visited by a charter was not necessarily part of the scheduled network.[1][8]
Aircraft and engineering
The BA production aircraft were variant 102 Concordes assembled at Filton by the British Aircraft Corporation and its successors as part of the Anglo-French programme. Each used four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 Mk 610 turbojets with reheat. British Airways quoted a cruise speed of 1,350 mph, approximately Mach 2, at altitudes up to 60,000 ft.[1][2]

The aircraft required specialised engineering, fuel-management and intake-control knowledge. British Airways said approximately 250 of its engineers supported the type. Its certification programme involved about 5,000 hours of testing before passenger service.[1]
The fleet carried several British Airways identities during its career: the 1970s Negus scheme, the Landor identity introduced in the 1980s and later Union Flag or other “World Images” tail designs. Liveries could change during major maintenance, so they are not reliable indicators of an airframe's production number or status.[4][2]
Braniff interchange operation
From 1979 to 1980, British Airways and Air France provided Concordes for a Braniff International interchange service between Washington Dulles and Dallas/Fort Worth. Braniff crews operated the domestic sector, while British Airways or Air France crews flew the transatlantic legs.[9][10]
US law required the aircraft to be entered on the US register for the domestic sector. The British and French registrations were temporarily covered and replaced by N registrations at Dulles, then restored for the international flight. The FAA records that five British Airways and five Air France Concordes were registered for the programme. These temporary marks belong in each aircraft's registration history; they do not represent ten additional airframes.[9]
The Dulles–Dallas sector had to remain subsonic. The Smithsonian notes that it was more expensive and no faster than conventional jet service, and the interchange ended in 1980.[11]
Grounding and return to service
After the Air France Flight 4590 accident near Paris on 25 July 2000, the French and British authorities suspended Concorde certificates of airworthiness. The UK CAA suspension took effect on 15 August 2000. The response focused on reducing the risk of tyre debris causing fuel-tank damage and fire.[12][13]
British Airways, the manufacturers and regulators developed modifications that included fuel-tank protection and revised tyres and wiring. Five BA aircraft returned to passenger service in 2001. G-BOAA and G-BOAB did not receive the return-to-service modification package and never flew again after August 2000.[12][2]
A grounded or unmodified aircraft remained part of the historical fleet even when unavailable for service. For this reason, fleet size, airworthy fleet and daily operating fleet must be distinguished when describing the 2000–03 period.
Retirement
British Airways announced on 10 April 2003 that it would retire all seven Concordes at the end of October. The company cited steadily falling passenger revenue, rising maintenance costs and an enhanced future maintenance programme that could not be justified during a wider downturn in premium travel.[14][8]
The last scheduled commercial service was BA002 from New York JFK to London Heathrow on 24 October 2003, operated by G-BOAG. British Airways arranged additional farewell and positioning flights after the final scheduled service. The last flight by any Concorde was G-BOAF's journey from Heathrow to Filton on 26 November 2003.[1][15][16]
Withdrawal ended British Airways' 27-year supersonic passenger operation. Concorde's flight deck required two pilots and a flight engineer, while its standard cabin crew comprised six.[1]
Preservation
British Airways retained ownership of several airframes while placing them with museums or airport collections. The final distribution was intentionally international and associated individual aircraft with important points in the fleet's history.[1]
G-BOAA, which operated the first BA passenger service, travelled by road and sea to the National Museum of Flight and arrived on 19 April 2004. G-BOAC, treated by BA as fleet flagship because of its BOAC registration, made its final flight to Manchester on 31 October 2003 and is housed at the Runway Visitor Park.[7][17]
G-BOAD is displayed beside the Intrepid Museum in New York and holds the Concorde transatlantic crossing record of 2 hours 52 minutes 59 seconds, set on 7 February 1996. G-BOAG, operator of the final BA scheduled service, flew to Seattle on 5 November 2003 and remains on loan from British Airways to the Museum of Flight.[18][15]
G-BOAE is preserved beside the passenger terminal at Grantley Adams International Airport, reflecting Barbados's long-running scheduled Concorde link. G-BOAF returned to Filton, where it had been built, and is the centrepiece of Aerospace Bristol. G-BOAB remains within Heathrow Airport and is the only member of the seven not placed in a public museum collection.[6][16][1]
Registrations and individual aircraft
The UK CAA's G-INFO register is the authoritative public source for British registration and deregistration records. The seven aircraft were deregistered after permanent withdrawal, but their historic G- marks remain their principal identifiers in museum and fleet records.[5]
Individual aircraft pages should link back to this fleet and to Concorde, while keeping the production number, CAA serial number, temporary US registrations, first flight, delivery, final flight and preservation status in separate structured fields. Current preservation access must be dated because museum opening arrangements can change.
