G-BOAF
G-BOAF is a preserved British-built Concorde Type 1 variant 102 formerly operated by British Airways. It is Concorde production number 216 and is recorded by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) under manufacturer serial number 100-016. The last Concorde built, it became the final example of the type to fly when it travelled from London Heathrow to Filton on 26 November 2003. The aircraft is displayed at Aerospace Bristol, close to the site where it was assembled.[1][2][3]
Identity
G-BOAF is commonly known as Alpha Foxtrot, from the final two letters of its registration. It was the twentieth and last completed Concorde, as well as the tenth assembled at Filton. Production number 216 belongs to the programme's even-numbered British sequence; 100-016 is the separate manufacturer serial recorded in the CAA civil register.[2][4][3]

The CAA identifies the manufacturer as the British Aircraft Corporation and the type as Concorde Type 1 Variant 102. Its extract records four Rolls-Royce Olympus 593 Mk 610-14-28 engines and a maximum take-off weight of 185,070 kg.[3]
Construction, registrations and delivery
The aircraft was initially registered G-BFKX while it remained a manufacturer-owned, unsold airframe. It made its first flight from Filton on 20 April 1979. Aerospace Bristol records that ten flights had been completed by the time of delivery the following year.[1]
On 14 December 1979 it entered the CAA registration ledger as G-N94AF, paired with the US mark N94AF. This dual-format identity had been prepared for the British Airways–Braniff interchange arrangement, under which Concordes changed registration for the subsonic Washington Dulles–Dallas/Fort Worth sector. The interchange programme ended before this aircraft entered British Airways service, and Aerospace Bristol states that production number 216 never appeared operationally in the combined markings.[1][3]
The aircraft was re-registered G-BOAF on 12 June 1980 and flew from Filton to Heathrow for delivery to British Airways on 13 June. Registration, delivery and entry into airline service were therefore distinct events.[1][5]
British Airways service
G-BOAF joined the airline after Concorde's scheduled network had become concentrated on long-haul supersonic services and charters. On 1 January 1983 it flew New York–London in 2 hours 56 minutes 35 seconds, then a record for a commercial transatlantic crossing; a later Concorde reduced that time.[1]
The aircraft departed Heathrow on a round-the-world charter on 1 April 1989. Twelve days later, during the Christchurch–Sydney sector, it sustained the most consequential structural event of its career.[1][6]
British Airways gave G-BOAF a revised cabin in 1993 and made it the first of its Concordes to receive the Chatham Dockyard Union-flag livery in June 1997.[1]
British Airways' published Concorde cabin contained 100 seats, divided between 40-seat forward and 60-seat aft cabins. The CAA register's historic maximum-passenger value of 144 is a regulatory limit, not evidence that G-BOAF operated with 144 installed passenger seats.[7][3]
1989 upper-rudder separation
On 12 April 1989, G-BOAF was carrying 100 passengers on a charter from Christchurch to Sydney during a round-the-world tour. While it was accelerating through approximately Mach 1.7 and climbing through flight level 440, those aboard heard a thud. Moderate vibration later occurred as the aircraft descended and decelerated. The crew retained normal control and landed at Sydney, where missing portions of the upper rudder were identified.[6]
The AAIB found that the rudder's trailing-edge modification had not been completed fully in accordance with the applicable drawings. Moisture entered the structure, causing corrosion and weakening the bond between layers until part of the rudder broke up. The report led to inspection and maintenance action across the Concorde fleet. The event should not be described as an engine failure: the AAIB considered the mild engine surge heard earlier unrelated to the rudder separation.[6]
On 15 July 1993, G-BOAF sustained tyre and landing-gear damage while landing at Heathrow. Debris punctured the underside of the left wing and the empty number 8 fuel tank. The AAIB reported that the landing itself was normal; the aircraft remained controllable and taxied clear after inspection by emergency services.[8]
Return-to-service development aircraft
After the Air France Flight 4590 accident in July 2000 and the subsequent suspension of Concorde operations, G-BOAF became British Airways' lead development aircraft for the return-to-service modifications. Work included Michelin near-zero-growth tyres, protective fuel-tank liners and changes to wiring around the landing gear, alongside a lighter refurbished cabin.[1][9]
The aircraft taxied at Heathrow on 9 July 2001 and flew on 17 July, becoming the first British Airways Concorde to fly after the grounding. It landed at RAF Brize Norton for further ground testing. On 11 September it operated the first British Airways operational-assessment flight, a supersonic circuit over the Bay of Biscay, and on 22 October completed the final assessment flight to New York before passenger services resumed.[1]
On 7 November 2001, the day British Airways and Air France restored Concorde passenger flights to New York, G-BOAF carried UK prime minister Tony Blair from London to Andrews Air Force Base. It operated the first post-grounding British Airways Concorde service to Barbados on 1 December.[1]
Retirement and final flights
British Airways withdrew Concorde passenger operations on 24 October 2003. G-BOAF operated a supersonic Bay of Biscay farewell circuit as BA9010C, one of three British Airways Concordes that arrived sequentially at Heathrow that afternoon. This was the aircraft's final passenger flight, not its final movement through the air.[10][11]
On 26 November, Captain Les Brodie commanded G-BOAF from Heathrow to Filton with flight crew and invited personnel aboard. The flight included the last supersonic sector made by Concorde before the aircraft landed at the airfield where it had been built. Because all other Concordes had already completed their final flights, the landing ended the type's flying career.[2][1][12]
The CAA recorded 18,257 airframe hours at 31 December 2003. The preserved-aircraft history records 6,045 landings and 5,639 supersonic flights. These figures use different measures: a supersonic flight is not interchangeable with a landing or a flight hour.[3][11]
Preservation at Filton
After its final landing, G-BOAF remained beside the Filton runway under the care of Airbus UK. Engineers from Airbus and British Airways moved it across the former airfield on 7 February 2017 and winched it into a purpose-built hangar, with less than one metre of clearance at each wingtip. Aerospace Bristol opened on 17 October 2017 with the aircraft as its principal exhibit.[13][1]
Hydraulic fluid had been drained after the final flight. In April 2019, the museum used an external hydraulic and electrical rig to move the visor and droop nose again. That limited demonstration restored one ground-operated system; it did not make the aircraft airworthy.[14]
The CAA de-registered G-BOAF on 4 May 2004 because it had been permanently withdrawn from use. The aircraft remains preserved indoors at Aerospace Bristol, where visitors can enter the passenger cabin and view the flight deck through a transparent barrier. Access arrangements may change and should be checked with the museum.[3][15]

100-016are different identifiers and are retained separately.G-BFKX, G-N94AF/N94AF and G-BOAF identify the same airframe at different stages; the planned Braniff-format markings do not establish that the aircraft flew Braniff service.
First flight, re-registration, delivery, entry into British Airways service and retirement occurred on different dates.
The 100-seat British Airways cabin and the CAA's regulatory maximum of 144 passengers describe different fields.
The final passenger flight on 24 October 2003 and the final flight on 26 November 2003 were separate events.
