Diamond Aircraft is an aircraft manufacturer headquartered at Wiener Neustadt, Austria, with an important Canadian manufacturing operation in London, Ontario. Its light aircraft serve private owners, flight schools and specialist operators. The group combines composite airframe production with engine development through Austro Engine.[1][2]
Origins and expansion
The business originated as Hoffmann Flugzeugbau in 1981. Its early motor-glider work established experience in composite structures that informed later powered aircraft. Expansion produced a range extending from the two-seat DA20 to four-seat aircraft and larger twins. The DA62 obtained European certification in 2015, widening the company's personal-transport offering beyond its established training types. Diamond also pursued experimental propulsion: the DA36 E-Star hybrid-electric demonstrator appeared in 2011, illustrating a separate research activity alongside conventional production programmes.[3]
Aircraft and training
The product range includes the single-engine DA20 and DA40 families and the twin-engine DA42 and DA62. The DA50 RG provides a five-seat, retractable-undercarriage single-engine alternative. Flight schools can therefore operate single- and multi-engine aircraft from the same supplier, while private customers have choices in seating capacity and propulsion layout. The DA42 is offered for multi-engine piston training; the DA40 occupies the single-engine training segment. These overlapping markets connect professional pilot instruction with personal aircraft ownership.[2]
Industrial organisation
Diamond's Wiener Neustadt operation combines headquarters functions with engineering and manufacturing. Its capabilities include prototype development, tooling, composite preparation, airframe manufacture, metalwork, electrical harnesses and instrument panels. Austro Engine is also based there, while the London facility provides a second major production base. Wanfeng acquired full ownership of the Diamond group at the end of 2017 after an earlier investment in the Canadian business. The transaction included the Austrian and Canadian aircraft companies and Austro Engine, preserving an organisation spanning airframes and propulsion.[1][4]
