Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, commonly abbreviated HAL, is an Indian aerospace manufacturer whose activities include aircraft, helicopters, engines, avionics and maintenance. Formed by merger in 1964, it traces its origins to Hindustan Aircraft, founded in Bangalore in December 1940. Its industrial history combines Indian aircraft development with production under foreign licences.[1]
Origins and consolidation
Walchand Hirachand established Hindustan Aircraft with support from the Government of Mysore. The Government of India acquired a shareholding in 1941 and assumed management in 1942. Early work included licensed aircraft construction, followed by repair and overhaul during the Second World War. After the war, the company developed the HT-2 basic trainer, which first flew in August 1951. Its subsequent aircraft included the HF-24 Marut fighter and HJT-16 Kiran jet trainer.[1]
Formation of HAL
Aeronautics India Limited was established in 1963 to undertake licensed MiG-21 manufacture, with airframe and engine facilities at Nasik and Koraput. The organisation also received the Kanpur establishment associated with HS 748 transport production. On 1 October 1964 it merged with Hindustan Aircraft to form Hindustan Aeronautics. The merger combined aircraft programmes and production centres spanning airframes, powerplants and associated equipment.[1]
Aircraft and support businesses
HAL's manufacturing portfolio has included the Tejas light combat aircraft, Su-30MKI fighter, Dornier 228 transport and Dhruv helicopter. Helicopter development also encompasses the Light Combat Helicopter and Light Utility Helicopter, while the HTT-40 provides a turboprop training programme. Its research establishments work on fixed-wing aircraft, rotorcraft, engines and mission systems. Repair and overhaul activities cover Indian, Russian and Western aircraft families, including the Jaguar, Mirage 2000, Hawk and MiG-21. Consequently, HAL's role extends beyond delivering newly built aircraft to sustaining mixed fleets through upgrades, engine work, accessories and avionics support.[2]
