MTU Aero Engines is a German aircraft-engine company specialising in propulsion components, joint engine programmes and maintenance. Its principal manufacturing location at Munich-Allach originated with BMW's aircraft-engine business. The MTU name dates from 1969, when Daimler-Benz and MAN combined engine activities in a group encompassing aircraft and diesel engines.[1]
Industrial origins and ownership
BMW Flugmotorenbau was established in 1934 and moved into its Allach factory in 1936. Wartime production included the BMW 801 radial engine and relied extensively on forced labour, including concentration-camp prisoners. The later MTU aircraft-engine enterprise developed through post-war industrial restructuring. It entered the Daimler-Benz aerospace group DASA in 1989, but remained with DaimlerChrysler when EADS was formed in 2000. Ownership passed to KKR in 2004, followed by a stock-market flotation in 2005.[1]
Engine technology and partnerships
MTU's principal technical specialities include low-pressure turbines, high-pressure compressors and turbine centre frames. Rather than confining its role to complete engines sold under its own name, it assumes development and manufacturing responsibilities for modules within international programmes. Examples include the V2500 low-pressure turbine and the high-pressure compressor developed for the PW6000. Military work includes compressor systems and control equipment for the Eurofighter's EJ200. Such responsibilities involve aerodynamic design, demanding materials and manufacturing processes, and integration with modules supplied by other engine partners.[2][3]
Maintenance business
The establishment of MTU Maintenance Hannover in 1979 marked a substantial expansion into commercial engine overhaul. Its first engine shop visit, involving a Hapag-Lloyd CF6-50, took place in 1981. Maintenance subsequently developed into a business serving multiple engine manufacturers and airline fleets. The Hannover portfolio includes the CF6, GE90, GEnx, PW1100G-JM and V2500, with work extending from major shop overhauls to support on the aircraft and at customer locations. This service activity complements the company's original-equipment manufacturing and provides engineering experience throughout an engine's operational life.[4][5]
