Eurofighter Typhoon
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a European twin-engine canard-delta multirole fighter developed by the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain. It entered service as an agile air-defence aircraft and has evolved into a broad swing-role combat platform.[1]
Development
The programme emerged from efforts by several European nations to replace Cold War-era fighters. The partner countries established Eurofighter GmbH, with national companies responsible for major airframe sections and systems. The first development aircraft flew in 1994.
Typhoon entered service in 2003. Successive production tranches have introduced improved sensors, computers, defensive equipment and air-to-surface weapons, while export sales have taken the aircraft to Austria, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Qatar.[2]
Design
A close-coupled canard and delta wing provide lift and agility, while an intentionally unstable configuration is managed by digital flight controls. Two EJ200 engines give rapid acceleration and supersonic performance.
The aircraft combines radar, infrared search-and-track, electronic support and data links. Newer aircraft use the Captor-E electronically scanned radar, and the weapons range includes Meteor, AMRAAM, Brimstone, Storm Shadow and precision-guided bombs.
Operational history
Typhoons perform quick-reaction alert, NATO air policing, expeditionary air defence and strike missions. British and Italian aircraft flew combat missions during the 2011 intervention in Libya, and the type has subsequently supported operations against the Islamic State.
The partner nations continue to modernise the fleet, including radar, electronic-warfare and cockpit improvements, while retaining national differences in weapons and equipment.
Variants and operators
The aircraft family includes Single-seat and twin-seat aircraft across Tranches 1–5. Equipment, weapons and mission systems differ among production blocks and national fleets.
Principal or notable users include Royal Air Force; German Air Force; Italian Air Force; Spanish Air and Space Force; export operators. Some operators have retired early versions while others continue upgrades or new procurement.[1]
Specifications
Published performance figures depend on configuration, fuel, altitude and mission profile. Representative figures for the family include a maximum speed of Mach 2.35 and a range of Approximately 2,900 km ferry range. The usual crew is 1 or 2, and power is provided by 2 × Eurojet EJ200 afterburning turbofans.[1]
