The Gloster Javelin was a British twin-engine military interceptor designed for all-weather operations. Its radar, delta wing and high-mounted tailplane supported interception by day or night. It was a high-altitude subsonic aircraft developed during the first decade of RAF jet-fighter service.[1][2]
Development and production
Prototype WD804 first flew on 26 November 1951. Five prototypes supported trials of wing, nose and canopy arrangements and the installation of 30 mm ADEN cannon. The first production FAW.1 flew on 22 July 1954, and No. 46 Squadron became the first operational unit in February 1956.[1]
Airframe and equipment
The large delta wing and distinctive T-tail separated the Javelin visually from contemporary swept-wing fighters. Airbrakes helped the crew control speed, while radar extended its interception capability beyond clear-weather conditions. The combination addressed an operational requirement for an aircraft able to meet approaching targets when visual interception alone was insufficient.[2]
Successive versions
The Javelin evolved through several fighter all-weather marks. Later versions introduced improved radar equipment and changes to the tail controls, while the FAW.7, first flown in September 1955, used more powerful Sapphire engines. These modifications developed the original airframe rather than replacing its basic delta-wing arrangement. RAF service ended in 1968, with the last operational aircraft serving No. 60 Squadron at Tengah.[1]
Deployment to Zambia
In December 1965 Javelins of No. 29 Squadron deployed from Akrotiri to Ndola in Zambia after Rhodesia’s unilateral declaration of independence. Their assignment was air defence. Argosy transports carried radar and supporting equipment for the deployment, illustrating the ground organisation required to establish fighter operations away from a permanent base. The squadron returned to Akrotiri in August 1966.[3]
