Lufthansa Boeing 747 registrations
The Lufthansa Boeing 747 registrations record comprises 26 passenger aircraft in the Lufthansa mainline fleet on 29 August 2026: eight Boeing 747-400s and eighteen Boeing 747-8 Intercontinentals. The registration-level census is reconciled against Lufthansa's official subtype totals, while Boeing manufacturer serial numbers (MSNs) are taken from the current production register.[1][2][3][4]
Scope and method
This register covers Lufthansa mainline passenger aircraft, not historic Lufthansa Cargo freighters, former registrations or 747s operated by another Lufthansa Group company. Lufthansa's official fleet pages provide the control totals of eight 747-400s and eighteen 747-8s. Flightradar24's live airline fleet supplies the 26 current registrations, and its Boeing 747 production list supplies the airframe MSN.[1][2][3][4]
The fleet label is dated. An aircraft can remain assigned while undergoing maintenance or temporary parking, and a sale can be followed by leaseback or continued operation. A current registration is therefore not described as retired merely because it has not flown recently. Conversely, a historic Lufthansa registration is not included solely because it still appears in a production list.
MSN is Boeing's permanent serial identity for an airframe. It is not the registration, line number, fleet count or engine serial number. Registration gaps preserve Lufthansa's fleet history and must not be filled by alphabetical inference.

These eight aircraft are not arranged in MSN order by registration. D-ABVM, MSN 29101, is the lowest-numbered airframe, followed by D-ABVU and D-ABVW; the later MSNs 29868–29872 span D-ABVX through D-ABVZ and then D-ABTK and D-ABTL. The sequence demonstrates why an alphabetical mark is not a production number.[4][5]
Lufthansa publishes a representative 371-seat 747-400 cabin with 67 Business, 32 Premium Economy and 272 Economy seats. The official seat map does not show First Class. Configuration remains an operator attribute and can change before retirement; it is not encoded in the MSN or registration.[6]

The 747-8 marks are nearly sequential but contain historically occupied gaps. D-ABYB, D-ABYD and D-ABYE are not current Lufthansa 747-8 registrations and are not inserted. MSN order also differs around D-ABYO: MSN 37841 received that registration, while MSNs 37839 and 37840 are D-ABYP and D-ABYQ.[4]
Lufthansa was the first airline to take delivery of the passenger 747-8 Intercontinental, receiving its first aircraft on 2 May 2012. The current fleet page publishes a representative 364-seat cabin with 8 First, 80 Business, 32 Premium Economy and 244 Economy seats. Lufthansa also publishes an Allegris seat map as the type enters cabin modification, so a single cabin count must not be assigned permanently to every registration.[7][8][9]
Variants and engines
The 30 customer-code suffix appears in both Lufthansa production designations: 747-430 and 747-830. It identifies the customer configuration in Boeing's historical designation system; it does not mean that the two generations share the same structure or engine installation.

The engine entry gives the installed family for the variant, not individual engine serial numbers. The CF6-powered 747-400 and GEnx-powered 747-8 require separate technical records, spares and maintenance data.[1][2]
Aircraft names and special liveries
Lufthansa has associated aircraft with German states and cities, but names can be changed or removed. Only names confirmed by current or dated operator sources should be added to individual-aircraft records.
D-ABYN is named Niedersachsen. In 2026 it received a blue centenary livery with an enlarged crane emblem to mark the airline's 100th founding anniversary. Lufthansa announced its return to Frankfurt on 5 March and scheduled-service return the following day. The livery is an individual-aircraft attribute and does not create a separate variant.[10]
Temporary operational events should likewise be dated. D-ABYO diverted to Brazzaville after smoke was detected on 6 August 2026 and returned to service on 12 August according to the airframe record. That short storage interval did not remove it from the fleet and illustrates why point-in-time status should not be converted into retirement.[11]
Retirement and fleet changes
Lufthansa Group announced in April 2026 that two 747-400s would be grounded from October for the 2026–27 winter period and that the remaining 747-400 fleet was planned to retire in 2027. The announcement did not identify the registrations. All eight therefore remain in this 29 August census, and none is pre-emptively labelled grounded or retired.[12][13]
The 747-8 fleet remains separate from that retirement statement. Lufthansa has selected the 747-8 for Allegris retrofit, supporting continued operation beyond the 747-400 withdrawal. A Group financial-report transaction or change of ownership does not by itself prove that a registration has left Lufthansa operation.[14][2]
Data-quality notes
The tables contain 26 unique registrations and 26 unique MSNs, matching the official eight-plus-eighteen subtype totals.
In Lufthansa fleetis dated 29 August 2026 and does not guarantee immediate serviceability.Registration, MSN and Boeing line number are different identifiers; this page records the first two.
Current cabin configuration is not inferred from registration or MSN.
The planned grounding of two 747-400s is not assigned to registrations because Lufthansa did not name them.
Historic Lufthansa 747 marks are excluded even when they remain visible in production and photograph databases.
