Curtiss-Wright is an American engineering company formed in 1929 through consolidation of aviation businesses associated with Glenn Curtiss and the Wright brothers. Once a major producer of complete aircraft, engines and propellers, it subsequently diversified into components, electronics and industrial services while retaining substantial aerospace activities.[1]

Aviation consolidation

The new corporation brought together airframe and engine businesses whose roots lay in aviation's early decades. Wright's air-cooled radial engines and Curtiss aircraft production provided complementary capabilities. During the 1930s the group developed engine components and manufacturing methods, including improved cylinder treatments and vibration-control measures. Cyclone engines powered transport and military aircraft, placing the company within other manufacturers' production programmes as well as its own. Curtiss-Wright therefore participated in aviation both as a prime aircraft producer and as an equipment supplier.[1][2]

Wartime production and diversification

The P-40 became one of Curtiss-Wright's principal wartime aircraft, alongside large-scale production of engines and electric propellers. After the war, the transition towards jet transport reduced the central role of the piston-engine and propeller businesses on which the company had depended. Diversification accelerated through the following decades. Curtiss-Wright entered additional industrial, electronic and nuclear-related activities while continuing to supply parts and overhaul support for existing aviation equipment. The corporation's survival consequently involved a change in its manufacturing emphasis rather than continued dependence on complete aircraft production.[1]

Aerospace equipment and services

Modern aerospace work includes actuation systems, sensors, valves, flight recording and flight-test equipment. Surface-treatment operations provide shot peening, laser peening and protective coatings for structures and engine components. These processes address fatigue, corrosion, wear and heat exposure, while associated materials testing supports manufacturing and maintenance decisions. Such services place Curtiss-Wright within aircraft and engine supply chains throughout a component's life. Its wider organisation also serves defence electronics, naval and power markets, reflecting the diversified industrial structure that developed after its early aviation-dominated period.[3][4]
