Enstrom Helicopter Corporation is an American manufacturer of light helicopters based in Menominee, Michigan. Founded in 1959, it developed from Rudy Enstrom's experiments with homebuilt rotorcraft. Its product range includes piston-powered helicopters and the turbine-powered 480B family for training, private and commercial operations.[1][2]
Experimental origins and production
Rudy Enstrom began developing helicopter ideas while working as an iron-mine mechanic. His experimental aircraft was tested in a Michigan quarry in 1957. With businessman Jack Christensen and additional engineering support, the project became the R.J. Enstrom Company in 1959. The early F-27 used a two-bladed rotor before development moved towards a three-bladed arrangement. The F-28 became the company's first certified helicopter, establishing a design lineage that persisted through later versions. Initial manufacturing occupied leased premises at Menominee airport.[3]
Aircraft families and markets
Enstrom developed the F-28 family alongside the more enclosed 280 series. Later offerings include the F28F and 280FX piston helicopters and the turbine-powered 480B. The 480 development drew upon United States Army training-helicopter requirements, although the manufacturer's market extends beyond military instruction. Aircraft can be configured for flight schools, private transport, sightseeing, agricultural work and police observation. This variety makes cabin equipment and mission installations important elements of the product offering, in addition to the underlying airframe and propulsion choice.[2][4]
Ownership and fleet support
The business changed ownership several times during its history. F. Lee Bailey acquired it in 1971, renamed it Enstrom Helicopter Corporation and oversaw a period of increased production and 280C development. Chuck Surack purchased Enstrom in 2022 with plans to rebuild the operation. Support for existing aircraft includes model-specific flight manuals, supplements, maintenance publications and parts information. The technical-publication catalogue covers both older piston helicopters and the later turbine series, reflecting the continuing support obligations created by a product line developed over several decades.[3][1][5]
