Ilyushin is a Russian aircraft design and manufacturing organisation originating in the Soviet design group led by Sergey Ilyushin from 1933. Its aircraft include wartime combat types, passenger transports and military cargo aircraft. The Ilyushin Aviation Complex later became a central organisation in United Aircraft Corporation's transport-aircraft activities.[1]
Origins and civil development
On 13 January 1933, a government order established a central experimental aircraft design bureau at Moscow's Plant No. 39, with Ilyushin in charge. His own design team emerged within that organisation. After wartime combat-aircraft work, passenger transport became increasingly important. The Il-12 and Il-14 were followed by the Il-18 turboprop and Il-62 long-range jet. The Il-18 also provided the basis for specialised aircraft, including the Il-20, Il-22 and Il-38. Sergey Ilyushin retired from the chief designer's position in 1970 but continued as a consultant.[1][2]
The Il-76 transport family
The Il-76 first flew in 1971 and became a major military and civil transport platform.[1] Its cargo-handling equipment, ability to operate from limited airfields and capacity for autonomous operations made it useful for military airlift. Development continued with the Il-76MD-90A, which introduced more powerful PS-90A-76 engines in place of the earlier powerplants. The updated aircraft also incorporated digital cockpit displays and revised navigation equipment. These changes extended the transport family's development through new propulsion and avionics while retaining its basic operational role.[3]
Industrial organisation
Ilyushin's modern industrial structure has combined the design bureau with large production organisations, including Aviastar and the Voronezh aircraft works, VASO. The Myasishchev experimental engineering enterprise also formed part of the aviation complex described by Rostec in its 2023 anniversary account. The portfolio covered transport, tanker, passenger and special-purpose aircraft programmes. This arrangement joins design authority with production and support capabilities, reflecting the long service lives and numerous specialised derivatives characteristic of the company's transport-aircraft work.[1][3]
