North American Aviation was an American aircraft and aerospace manufacturer whose products ranged from wartime trainers and fighters to experimental rocket aircraft and Apollo spacecraft. Founded as a holding company in 1928, it was reorganised during the 1930s and became a major manufacturing enterprise under James H. Kindelberger.[1]
Aircraft manufacturing
Reorganisation following the 1934 Air Mail Act changed the company's direction, and manufacturing moved to Southern California.[1] Its major wartime products included the T-6 Texan trainer, B-25 Mitchell bomber and P-51 Mustang fighter. These aircraft addressed substantially different military requirements and generated extensive production work. After the war, the company developed jet fighters including the F-86 Sabre. Lee Atwood, who joined North American in 1934 and later became its president and chief executive, played a central role in its technical and corporate development.[2]
Experimental flight and spacecraft
North American built three X-15 rocket aircraft for a joint research programme involving the American aeronautical research agency and military services. Flights began in 1959, using air launch from a B-52 and an unpowered landing after the rocket-powered portion. The aircraft investigated aerodynamic heating, high-altitude control and human factors at hypersonic speeds. This experience connected with the company's later role as prime contractor for the Apollo command and service modules. Materials and structural techniques investigated through X-15 work informed spacecraft engineering.[3][4]
Merger and industrial legacy
In 1967 North American merged with Rockwell Standard to form North American Rockwell, later renamed Rockwell International. Its aerospace activities therefore continued within a broader corporate organisation. Boeing acquired Rockwell's aerospace and defence segment in December 1996. The sequence places North American's original aircraft manufacturing, its expansion into space technology and its eventual integration into Boeing within distinct corporate periods. Its legacy includes both mass-produced operational aircraft and small research programmes whose technical results supported later aerospace development.[1][4]
