Piper Aircraft is an American general-aviation manufacturer whose history began with the Taylor aircraft business and William T. Piper's development of the Cub. The Piper Aircraft Corporation was established in 1937. The Cub and wartime production
The Cub's ancestry lay in the Taylor E-2, followed by the J-2 and J-3. Designer Walter Jamouneau revised the earlier aircraft while retaining its basic lightweight concept. The J-3 became closely associated with the Civilian Pilot Training programme before American entry into the Second World War. Military derivatives, including the L-4, performed observation, liaison and transport duties. Expansion of the range
Piper moved beyond its early tandem-seat light aircraft into larger and more varied designs. The PA-23 Apache, introduced in 1954, was its first twin-engined all-metal aircraft. Later products included the Seneca light twin, the Cheyenne turboprop and the Seminole trainer. Flooding from Hurricane Agnes severely affected the Lock Haven factory in 1972 and ended Comanche production. Training and personal transport
Piper's current range separates overlapping training and transport requirements. Archer and Pilot 100i aircraft provide single-engine training platforms, while the Seminole supports twin-engine instruction. The M-Class addresses personal and business travel with piston and turboprop products. The M700 Fury replaced the M600/SLS at the top of the range in 2024.
