Republic Aviation was an American aircraft manufacturer based at Farmingdale on Long Island. It developed from the Seversky Aircraft Company, founded in 1931, and adopted the Republic name in 1939. Seversky origins
Alexander de Seversky's company developed high-performance aircraft during the 1930s, including the P-35 fighter. Financial difficulties led the board to remove Seversky from control in 1939, after which the business became Republic Aviation. Existing orders and development work helped retain its workforce during the transition. The AP-4 experimental fighter led to the P-43, while other projects explored different engines and interceptor concepts. The Thunderbolt and jet aircraft
The P-47 developed around a powerful radial engine and turbo-supercharging system, producing a large, heavily armed fighter. It served in both air combat and ground attack, and its manufacture drove rapid expansion at Farmingdale. Republic subsequently moved into jet aircraft with the F-84 Thunderjet and later the F-105 Thunderchief. These families sustained the company's military focus through the Korean and Vietnam War periods. Fairchild period and closure
The later Fairchild-Republic organisation produced the A-10 Thunderbolt II for close air support. Republic thus remained associated with attack aircraft even as the propulsion, structures and mission equipment changed substantially from its wartime products. The operation ultimately closed in 1987. Cradle of Aviation Museum curator Joshua Stoff described his visit during the liquidation of the corporate archives, recording the vulnerability of industrial records when a manufacturer disappears.
