Saunders-Roe was a British aircraft and marine engineering company based at Cowes on the Isle of Wight. It acquired its name in 1929 when Alliott Verdon-Roe and John Lord took control of S. E. Saunders. Flying boats remained central to its work, but the company later pursued helicopters, experimental interceptors and hovercraft.[1]
Marine construction and aviation
The Saunders business developed expertise in lightweight watertight structures before manufacturing aircraft. Its patented Consuta construction combined thin wooden layers and waterproofed fabric, joined with copper stitching. The company moved to Cowes in 1911 and collaborated with Sopwith on the Bat-Boat. Under Saunders-Roe ownership, aircraft included the Cutty Sark, Cloud and London. Wartime activity also involved maintaining Catalinas and building Supermarine Walrus and Sea Otter aircraft, connecting the company's waterborne aviation experience with a wider production network.[1]
Experimental mixed-power aircraft
The SR.53 represented a substantial departure from flying-boat manufacture. It combined a de Havilland Spectre rocket motor with an Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojet in an experimental interceptor. Two aircraft were built at East Cowes and transported to Boscombe Down for assembly and testing. The first flew on 16 May 1957. Although production plans were affected by the 1957 defence policy changes, experimental flying continued, examining high-altitude performance and the behaviour of the combined propulsion system.[2]
Final programmes and transfer
The surviving SR.53's last flight took place in October 1959, and the Ministry of Aviation ordered work to cease in July 1960. Meanwhile Saunders-Roe had entered the helicopter field through acquisition of Cierva interests in 1951 and investigated air-cushion vehicles during the same decade. Westland acquired Saunders-Roe in 1959. The transfer brought its rotary-wing work into the emerging consolidated British helicopter business, while experimental aircraft and company archives preserved evidence of its broader technological ambitions.[2][1]
