Slingsby Aviation was a British aircraft manufacturing business which developed from Fred Slingsby's gliders into composite aircraft and structures. Based at Kirkbymoorside in North Yorkshire, the enterprise became a major supplier to British gliding before extending its materials expertise into powered aircraft and other aerospace applications.[1]
Gliders and materials
Fred Slingsby built his first glider, the Type 1 Falcon, in Scarborough in 1931 and moved to Kirkbymoorside in 1934. Slingsby Sailplanes was incorporated in 1939. The company's aircraft became common in British clubs and achieved international competition success, including leading places at the 1952 World Gliding Championships. Over time, production moved beyond traditional woodworking into glass-reinforced plastic and carbon-fibre structures. Vickers acquired the company in 1969, with its composite-material capabilities forming an important part of the attraction.[1]
Powered aircraft and corporate changes
The T.65 Vega sailplane incorporated a carbon-fibre main spar, while the subsequent T.67 Firefly programme applied composite construction to a powered trainer. The Firefly's development began in 1981 and led to military training applications. Following earlier separation of marine and aviation activities, the aviation business passed through Cobham ownership and later Marshall Aerospace. The company adopted the Slingsby Advanced Composites name as its focus shifted towards the supply of structures rather than complete aircraft.[1]
Aerospace structures
The successor business describes design, manufacture, testing and integration capabilities for civil and military aircraft, helicopters and uncrewed systems. Its products include interior trim panels for the C-130J and composite structures used in naval decoy launchers. Production at Kirkbymoorside brings engineering, lay-up, curing, machining and assembly into a common facility. These activities retain a connection with the earlier aircraft business through the practical problem of producing lightweight structures that meet demanding strength, durability and certification requirements.[2]
