The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger was an American military all-weather interceptor built around a delta wing and radar-controlled weapons system. It entered Air Defense Command service in 1956 and formed part of the United States' Cold War defence against approaching bombers.[1]
Aerodynamic development
The first F-102 flew on 24 October 1953. Development exposed the importance of transonic drag: applying the area rule to the aircraft's overall cross-sectional shape helped turn the original design into an effective supersonic interceptor. NACA research included tests of rocket-powered models before and after the changes.[1][2]
Convair built 889 single-seat F-102As and 111 TF-102 trainers. The trainer seated its two occupants side by side, an unusual arrangement compared with the tandem cockpits of many contemporary fighters. An afterburning Pratt & Whitney J57 powered the operational aircraft.[1]
Interception and weapons
The radar and fire-control equipment helped guide the aircraft through an interception and control weapons release. The F-102 carried its principal weapons internally, preserving a relatively clean external shape for the high-speed approach to a target. Its armament combined missiles with unguided rockets.[1][3]
Falcon missiles included radar-guided and infrared-guided types, and the aircraft could also use the nuclear-armed AIM-26. Twenty-four smaller unguided rockets were installed in the weapons-bay doors. These were distinct from the guided missiles carried inside the bay; the mixed installation reflected several competing approaches to destroying a bomber.[3]
Defence deployments
The Delta Dagger served at overseas defence stations as well as in the continental United States. Aircraft 56-1416, preserved by the National Museum of the United States Air Force, served with the 57th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron in Iceland and intercepted Soviet reconnaissance aircraft. Such patrols illustrate the type's routine operational purpose: identifying and, if necessary, engaging aircraft approaching defended airspace.[1]
