The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark was an American military strike aircraft with variable-sweep wings and a side-by-side crew arrangement. It was designed for long-range attacks, including low-level flight in poor weather, and became an important precision-strike platform in later versions.[1][2]
Joint programme origins
The TFX project originated in an Air Force tactical fighter-bomber requirement. In 1960 the Department of Defense combined it with the Navy's requirement for an air-superiority fighter. The F-111A first flew in December 1964 and reached the Air Force in 1967, while the naval F-111B was eventually cancelled.[1]
A total of 566 F-111s of all series were built, including 159 F-111As. The informal Aardvark nickname did not become official until the aircraft's 1996 retirement ceremony. The name therefore describes the family historically even though it was not its original official designation.[1]
Wings and attack systems
The wings extended for take-off, landing and slower flight, then swept aft for high-speed operation. Terrain-following equipment supported low-altitude penetration. In the F-111F, the Pave Tack infrared targeting and laser-designating system added the ability to find targets and guide laser-guided bombs.[2]
The pilot occupied the left seat and the weapon systems officer the right. This arrangement supported cooperation during navigation and attack, while two afterburning Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines powered the aircraft.[2]
Combat operations
An initial Southeast Asian deployment in 1968 produced mixed results. After early problems were corrected, F-111As returned in 1972 and conducted night attacks during the later bombing campaigns.[1]
F-111Fs subsequently attacked Libya during Operation El Dorado Canyon in 1986 and Iraqi targets during Desert Storm. The F-111F preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force led strikes in both operations, documenting the family's transition from troubled early deployment to mature precision attack service.[2]
