The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine military multirole fighter originally developed by General Dynamics and subsequently produced and developed by Lockheed Martin. Design
The F-16 combines a bubble canopy, side-mounted control stick and a reclined pilot's seat. These features improve visibility and help the pilot operate under manoeuvring loads. Origins and international production
The YF-16 originated in the United States Air Force's Lightweight Fighter programme. General Dynamics and Northrop received prototype contracts in April 1972. The YF-16 made an unplanned first flight on 20 January 1974 during a high-speed taxi test, before its formal flight-test debut.
