The Grumman F4F Wildcat was an American military carrier fighter that helped sustain United States Navy and Marine Corps aviation during the early Pacific war. It also served with Britain's Fleet Air Arm, initially under the name Martlet. Its compact size and durable construction kept it useful aboard escort carriers after newer fighters appeared.[1][2]
Design development
Grumman's initial proposal was a biplane, but competition from the Brewster Buffalo led to a monoplane redesign. The improved F4F-3 used a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 radial engine, revised tail surfaces and increased wing area. Production aircraft carried wing-mounted .50-inch machine guns.[1]
The early F4F-3 had fixed wings. The F4F-4 introduced Grumman's distinctive folding system, greatly reducing the space required for each aircraft in a carrier hangar. Armour and self-sealing tanks improved protection, although additional equipment also increased weight.[1]
Combat employment
British Martlets fought German aircraft before the United States entered the war. American Wildcats then became central to naval fighter operations during 1942. Pilots frequently faced the Mitsubishi Zero, using the Wildcat's strengths within tactics that compensated for differences in performance.[1][2]
The aircraft remained particularly suitable for smaller carriers. Its carrier role therefore continued even as larger and more powerful Hellcats increasingly equipped the fleet carriers.[2]
Eastern Aircraft production
As Grumman concentrated on the F6F, General Motors' Eastern Aircraft Division continued Wildcat manufacture under the FM designation. This allowed production of an established design to continue without occupying the same manufacturing capacity as its successor.[2]
The Smithsonian's FM-1 was the four-hundredth example built at Eastern's Linden, New Jersey, plant. Accepted in July 1943, it served mainly at Naval Air Station Norman, Oklahoma. That surviving aircraft represents both industrial wartime expansion and the training organisation behind carrier operations.[2]
