Grumman F6F Hellcat

The Grumman F6F Hellcat was an American military carrier fighter introduced during the Second World War. It became the United States Navy's standard carrier fighter during 1944 and also equipped Britain's Fleet Air Arm. Its design combined substantial power, rugged construction and straightforward carrier handling.[1]

Development

The project began as a proposed improvement to the F4F Wildcat, but the changes required for a more powerful engine produced a substantially new aircraft. A larger propeller required taller landing gear, while revised wing and tail surfaces accompanied the increase in power and weight.[2]

The first prototype flew in June 1942 with a Wright R-2600 engine. A second configuration adopted the Pratt & Whitney R-2800, providing the power used by production Hellcats. Grumman emphasised manufacturability and strength rather than an elaborate or experimental airframe arrangement.[2]

Wartime operations

F6F-3s began combat operations with VF-5 from USS Yorktown during the Marcus Island raid of 31 August 1943. Large-scale manufacture rapidly expanded the fleet. The Hellcat became a principal aircraft in the carrier offensive across the Pacific.[1]

The F6F-5 followed with refinements to the cowling and windshield and greater provision for bombs and rockets. Specialised night-fighter and photographic versions also served, extending the family beyond ordinary daytime interception.[1]

Postwar experimental use

Some Hellcats were converted into radio-controlled drones after frontline service. The Smithsonian's F6F-3K participated in Operation Crossroads at Bikini in 1946, carrying instrumentation and photographic material to gather information about radiation following a nuclear test.[2]

That aircraft had previously served in training assignments after sustaining damage in Hawaii. Its history shows how surviving airframes could move from pilot training to remotely controlled research, continuing to contribute after newer fighters had begun replacing them in operational squadrons.[2]
