The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is an American four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. Developed for tactical airlift, it carries personnel and cargo and supports airdrop and other specialised missions. The Hercules name covers a long-running family, including the later C-130J Super Hercules, rather than one unchanging set of engines, crew arrangements or performance figures.[1][2]
Origins
The prototype YC-130 first flew on 23 August 1954. Lockheed developed the aircraft around military transport requirements that emphasised useful payload and operations from limited airfields. Its configuration prioritised moving people and equipment rather than the passenger comfort and airport infrastructure associated with commercial airliners.[3][2]
Cargo design
The Hercules has an integral rear loading ramp. Vehicles and other cargo can be moved directly into the cargo compartment, making the aircraft useful where extensive handling facilities are unavailable. Lockheed Martin identifies this arrangement, together with range and austere-field capability, as central to the type's tactical-airlift function.[2]
The cargo hold can be configured for different loads, including troops, cargo and medical evacuation. Payload arrangements and compartment length vary by version.[1]
Engines and later variants
The C-130H and C-130J illustrate the family's technical development. Air Mobility Command lists Allison T56 engines for the H and Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 engines for the J. The J also incorporates a revised flight deck and systems, so its crew and performance data need to be identified separately.[1]

Wider family
Lockheed Martin has repeatedly revised the design since its original introduction. Civil cargo derivatives form part of the wider Hercules lineage, including the LM-100J associated with the Super Hercules. A civil derivative's certification and intended operation differ from those of its military counterpart.[2]

The C-130 demonstrates the lasting value of a transport layout organised around practical cargo handling.
