The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was a four-engine jet military transport that helped replace piston-powered strategic airlifters. Transport layout
The Starlifter used four Pratt & Whitney TF33 turbofans and a cargo compartment adaptable to passengers, freight or medical evacuation. Operational experience exposed a mismatch between cabin volume and lifting ability. Loads often filled the available space before reaching the aircraft’s weight limit. Stretching the airframe
The C-141B conversion lengthened the fuselage by approximately 23 feet and added aerial refuelling. The first modified aircraft reached Altus Air Force Base in December 1979, and the conversion programme finished in 1982. Wing strengthening later extended structural life. Operational history
The aircraft known as Hanoi Taxi, serial 66-0177, carried released American prisoners of war from Hanoi to the Philippines on 12 February 1973. It later received the same stretch and avionics modifications as other aircraft and continued flying for more than three decades after that mission. Starlifters transferred increasingly to Reserve and National Guard units from 1986.
