The Lockheed P-2 Neptune was an American military land-based maritime patrol aircraft, originally designated P2V. It entered operational service in 1947 and remained with the Naval Air Reserve until 1978. Development and configuration
The XP2V-1 prototype first flew on 17 May 1945. The Neptune followed the wartime expansion of land-based naval patrol aviation, offering higher speed than contemporary flying boats. A large radome beneath the fuselage housed later radar equipment. The P2V-7, subsequently designated SP-2H, added two underwing jet pods to supplement its piston engines. Long-distance demonstration
A specially modified P2V-1, Truculent Turtle, left Perth on 29 September 1946 with a four-person crew. Extra fuel supported a planned flight to Washington, but weather and headwinds forced the crew to choose Columbus, Ohio, instead. Patrol deployments
VP-1 provides an example of the Neptune's operational employment. From a base at Naha, Okinawa, it patrolled sea lanes around the Formosa Strait during the opening phase of the Korean War. In 1955 the same squadron completed an around-the-world flight. Unlike the single heavily modified Turtle, this movement demonstrated the ability to deploy an entire operational patrol squadron over great distances.
