The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was an American twin-engine military night fighter developed specifically to find and attack aircraft after dark. Radar carried in its nose allowed the crew to locate targets independently of visual illumination. It entered operational service during 1944 and later performed night-intruder and scientific-research duties.[1]
Night-fighter design
The P-61 combined a large twin-boom airframe with space for radar equipment and a crew of two or three, depending on configuration. A pilot flew the aircraft while radar information helped guide interception. This arrangement turned the aircraft into an integrated night-fighting system rather than a daytime fighter simply operated after sunset.[1]
The XP-61 underwent flight testing in 1942, and production deliveries began late in 1943. Its first operational night-interception mission in Europe took place on 3 July 1944. The Black Widow subsequently operated over enemy territory as a night intruder.[1]
Wartime deployment
By the end of the conflict, the Army Air Forces had formed fourteen Black Widow squadrons. They served in Europe, the Mediterranean, the Pacific and China-Burma-India. In China, aircraft protected B-29 bases and helped lost or damaged bombers find their way back to airfields.[2]
Although the Navy considered acquiring the type and Marines undertook training, neither service established the operational Black Widow force originally contemplated. Its combat history remained principally an Army Air Forces story.[2]
P-61C and scientific work
The improved P-61C incorporated turbo-superchargers, air brakes and provisions for additional external tanks or bombs. These changes increased performance, but the version arrived too late for wartime combat.[2]
Its strong structure, stability and altitude capability later made it suitable for Project Thunderstorm. Instrumented aircraft flew through storms in Florida and Ohio during 1946–1947, gathering measurements of turbulence and atmospheric conditions. The night fighter thus contributed to research intended to improve aviation safety.[2]
