The Rockwell B-1 Lancer is an American military heavy bomber with variable-sweep wings and four afterburning turbofan engines. Developed through the B-1A and operational B-1B programmes, it evolved from a Cold War strategic bomber into a long-range conventional strike aircraft.[1][2]
Development and entry into service
The B-1A began flight testing in 1974, but its production programme was cancelled. Work continued, and President Ronald Reagan revived the bomber effort in 1981 as the B-1B programme. The Air Force planned to acquire one hundred aircraft.[2]
The B-1B first flew in October 1984. The first operational aircraft, Star of Abilene, arrived at Dyess Air Force Base on 29 June 1985. Initial operational capability followed in October 1986. These milestones distinguish the production B-1B from the earlier experimental B-1A.[1][2]
Configuration
Forward wing settings support take-off, landing and aerial refuelling, while greater sweep suits higher-speed flight. Four General Electric F101-GE-102 engines provide propulsion. The crew consists of two pilots and two combat systems officers.[1]
Radar, GPS-aided inertial navigation and data links support target location and weapons employment. Radar warning, electronic jamming, expendable countermeasures and a towed decoy contribute to protection. Its internal payload capacity is listed as 75,000 pounds, with possible loads including conventional bombs, Joint Direct Attack Munitions and standoff missiles.[1]
Conventional operations
The B-1's operational emphasis shifted towards conventional weapons during the 1990s. It fought in Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and later supported operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Software and weapons-integration work allowed the aircraft to carry a wider range of precision weapons, changing how its large bomb bays were used. The bomber's later value therefore rested on both its original carrying capacity and continued development of its targeting and weapons systems.[2]
