Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion

The Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion is an American military heavy-transport helicopter family developed for the Marine Corps. Its original twin-engine design led to specialised rescue and minesweeping aircraft and to later, substantially enlarged heavy-lift derivatives.[1]

Marine Corps origins

The Marine Corps sought a ship-based helicopter able to move heavy loads between ships and shore, recover aircraft and carry troops or casualties. Sikorsky won the competition with its S-65 proposal. The first YCH-53A flew on 14 October 1964, drawing on dynamic components and design experience from earlier Sikorsky programmes.[1]

Original configuration

The CH-53A used two General Electric T64 turboshaft engines, a six-bladed main rotor and a four-bladed tail rotor. Fuel was carried in external sponsons. The transport cabin and external-load capability supported different cargo arrangements, while related H-53 versions were developed for combat rescue, special operations and airborne minesweeping.[1]

The Super Stallion

The CH-53E Super Stallion substantially developed the family with three T64 engines and increased heavy-lift capability. It was designed to transport troops, equipment and supplies during amphibious operations while remaining compatible with shipboard use. Its propulsion and dimensions differ from the original twin-engine Sea Stallion, so the E-model’s specifications should not be applied to earlier CH-53A or D aircraft.[2]

The King Stallion successor

The CH-53K King Stallion is a new-build replacement for the CH-53E. It uses three T408 engines, fly-by-wire controls, composite rotor blades and a wider cabin. NAVAIR records initial operational capability in April 2022. The K-model continues the ship-to-shore heavy-transport mission, but its new propulsion, controls and structure make it a distinct development within the broader Stallion lineage.[3]
