Development and introduction
The Army’s 1972 requirement sought a reliable utility helicopter for future airmobile operations. Sikorsky’s prototype flew in 1974. The Army accepted its first production UH-60A in October 1978, followed by deliveries to operational aviation units of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions in 1979. Tactical and specialised roles
Black Hawks have performed troop transport, medical evacuation and special operations, with equipment adapted to the assignment. External sling loads allow carriage of supplies or equipment that need not fit inside the cabin. The UH-60L
In 1989 the UH-60L introduced General Electric T700-GE-701C engines and an improved-durability gearbox. The changes supported greater lifting capability and better performance in hot conditions or at altitude. Later family development
The programme expanded through electronic-warfare, special-operations and medical-evacuation versions. The UH-60M reached its first unit delivery in 2006, while the HH-60M medical variant first flew during the same year. These developments mean that the Black Hawk name covers aircraft with different systems and mission equipment.
