The Vought F-8 Crusader was an American military carrier fighter developed to meet a 1952 Navy requirement for supersonic level-flight performance. Originally designated F8U, it combined a powerful turbojet with a distinctive variable-incidence wing and retained cannon armament alongside missiles.[1]
Carrier design
The Crusader's wing could be raised relative to the fuselage for take-off and landing. This allowed the wing to operate at a useful angle of attack without requiring the entire fuselage to adopt the same nose-high attitude, improving the pilot's view during carrier approaches. A large intake beneath the nose supplied the Pratt & Whitney J57 engine.[1]
The fighter carried four 20-mm cannon and could use Sidewinder missiles and external ordnance. Its retention of guns helped produce the nickname “Last of the Gunfighters,” although its operational weapons were not confined to cannon.[1]
Operational career
Crusaders fought over Vietnam, while photographic reconnaissance versions gave the Navy a fast camera platform. The RF-8G outlasted the fighter versions in American naval service and retired in 1987. Training units were also central to the aircraft's career: the museum's F-8A spent much of its service teaching replacement pilots with VF-174 at Cecil Field.[1]
Digital flight-control research
NASA converted an F-8C into a digital fly-by-wire research aircraft. Its first flight in this form took place on 25 May 1972, with Gary Krier as pilot. An Apollo-derived computer and inertial equipment translated pilot inputs into electronic commands to the aircraft's control system.[2]
The initial system was later replaced with a triply redundant digital arrangement, providing backup computing capacity after a failure. The programme accumulated 210 flights over thirteen years and helped establish practical techniques for computer-controlled flight. A former carrier fighter thus contributed to technologies later adopted in both military aircraft and commercial airliners.[2]
