The Vought F4U Corsair was an American military fighter distinguished by its inverted gull wing. Developed for naval aviation, it first gained extensive combat experience with land-based Marine units before becoming an important carrier aircraft. It served in both the Second World War and the Korean War.[1]
Airframe and propulsion
Designer Rex Beisel's team built the aircraft around the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine and a large propeller. The bent wing allowed relatively short main landing gear while providing clearance for the propeller. The prototype first flew on 29 May 1940.[1]
Production changes placed six .50-inch machine guns in the wings and moved the cockpit rearward to accommodate a fuselage fuel tank. That arrangement helped preserve a narrow fuselage but restricted the pilot's forward view during landing.[2]
Carrier difficulties and Marine service
Early Corsairs presented problems during carrier approaches, including poor visibility, bouncing on touchdown and difficult low-speed behaviour. These characteristics delayed widespread American carrier employment and encouraged initial use from land bases.[1][2]
Marine Fighter Squadron 124 received Corsairs in early 1943, and additional units followed in the Solomon Islands. Modifications to the pilot's position, canopy, landing gear and stall behaviour gradually improved carrier suitability. The aircraft subsequently served from fleet carriers as well as island airfields.[1]
Production and later roles
Demand led to manufacture by Goodyear and Brewster as well as Vought. Their aircraft carried FG and F3A designations respectively. Later versions incorporated different armament and increasingly important bomb and rocket capabilities.[1]
The Corsair remained useful as a fighter-bomber in Korea. The Smithsonian's F4U-1D is displayed in markings representing a Marine close-support aircraft of VMF-113 in 1944, illustrating the close connection between the type and Marine aviation's support of ground operations.[2]
