The Bristol Centaurus is an eighteen-cylinder sleeve-valve radial aircraft engine. It represented a major late development of Bristol's piston-engine technology and powered aircraft as different as the Hawker Sea Fury fighter and the enormous Bristol Brabazon transport prototype.[1][2][3]
Development and timing
Cooling difficulties, Bristol's other commitments and a shortage of suitable airframes delayed development. Its principal service came after the Second World War, when large piston engines still equipped fighters and transports despite the rapid advance of jet propulsion. The Centaurus-powered Tempest II prototype first flew on 28 June 1943, but the aircraft's operational use belonged to the post-war period.[4][5]
Fighter installations
The Sea Fury FB.11 used a Centaurus 18 rated at 2,480 hp. That engine supported a single-seat naval fighter-bomber armed with four cannon and capable of carrying rockets, bombs or external fuel tanks. The Fury programme had explored several powerplants: prototype NX798 used a Centaurus XII, while other experimental aircraft tested Griffon and Sabre engines.[2]
The production Sea Fury became an important final expression of Hawker's piston-fighter development. Its engine combined a large radial installation with the power needed for carrier operations and substantial external loads, extending the Centaurus's career beyond the earlier Tempest programme.[2]
Coupled transport installation
The Brabazon used eight 2,500 hp Centaurus XX engines buried in its wings. They were coupled in pairs to drive four sets of contra-rotating propellers. This arrangement concentrated eight engines into four propeller stations and was intended to reduce noise in the passenger cabin.[3]
The prototype first flew on 2 September 1949. Although the airliner never entered service, its propulsion system demonstrated a notably different application of the Centaurus: multiple coupled engines supporting a large long-range transport rather than a single engine powering a fighter.[3]
