The Eurojet EJ200 is an afterburning turbofan powering the Eurofighter Typhoon. It is produced by a consortium comprising Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, Avio Aero and ITP Aero. MTU dates entry into service to 2003, with the engine supporting the Typhoon's multirole combat mission.[1]
Architecture and thrust
The EJ200 uses two shafts, a three-stage low-pressure compressor and a five-stage high-pressure compressor. Each compressor is driven by a single-stage turbine. The engine produces approximately 60 kN without afterburner and 90 kN with reheat, with a bypass ratio of 0.4:1 and an overall pressure ratio of 26:1. Its published dimensions are approximately four metres long and one tonne in weight.[2]
Compressor technology
MTU developed both compression systems and introduced integrally bladed discs, or blisks, to the programme. The low-pressure compressor uses three blisk stages, while the high-pressure compressor combines three blisk stages with two conventional stages. The engine also uses single-crystal turbine blades and a convergent-divergent nozzle.[1]
Controls and operability
The digital engine control and monitoring unit integrates control with health and life-cycle monitoring. Eurojet's technical summary identifies automatic surge detection and recovery, a high surge margin and a variable-parameter nozzle among the design features. These systems support stable operation as the fighter changes speed, altitude and power demand.[2]
Modular support
The engine has fifteen fully interchangeable modules and is maintained on condition. MTU is responsible for final assembly, testing and repair of German and Austrian engines as well as its manufacturing contribution to the wider programme. This division of work links a multinational production arrangement to support of individual national fleets, while retaining common engine modules and technical standards.[1]
