Europrop TP400-D6

The Europrop TP400-D6 is a large turboprop developed for the Airbus A400M military transport. Its output exceeds 11,000 shaft horsepower at sea level. The engine received EASA civil certification in 2011 and entered service with the aircraft in August 2013.[1]

Three-shaft architecture

The gas generator combines a five-stage intermediate-pressure compressor with a six-stage high-pressure compressor, each driven by its own single-stage turbine. A separate three-stage low-pressure turbine provides power to the propeller system through the reduction gearbox. The overall pressure ratio is approximately 25:1. Europrop lists a dry weight of about 1,900 kilograms and a length of 3.5 metres.[2]

Propeller rotation

The design supports both right-handed and left-handed propeller rotation. Europrop describes a common casing arrangement for one direction and an additional gear train for the other. This capability allows the A400M propulsion installation to achieve its required propeller arrangement while retaining a common engine family.[2]

Control and operating envelope

Full-authority digital engine control manages the powerplant and provides information for post-flight troubleshooting. The engine was developed for operation up to 40,000 feet, combining the high-altitude requirements of transport flights with military operational demands. The programme's civil certification was part of the original development approach rather than an approval sought only after military service.[1]

Maintenance and mission support

The TP400-D6 uses interchangeable modules to simplify maintenance and improve engine availability. Europrop's programme literature links this modular construction with operation in harsh environments and support of the A400M's transport missions. The engine's high output and independent compression and power systems give the aircraft turbine-driven propellers suited to both long-distance transit and demanding military transport work.[1]
