The General Electric CF34 is a turbofan family central to the growth of regional jets. It entered business-aircraft service on the Challenger 601 in 1983 and airline service on Lufthansa CityLine's Bombardier CRJ100 on 2 November 1992. Its principal branches are the CF34-3, CF34-8 and CF34-10.[1][2]
From business aircraft to airlines
The early CF34 established a civil application before the regional-jet market expanded. GE's history describes the Challenger engine as a foundation for the CRJ programme, which brought the design into scheduled airline operations. The CRJ100 used the CF34-3A1, linking the engine's corporate-aircraft experience with a new generation of fifty-seat airline jets.[1]
The smaller branch
CF34-3 engines power aircraft including the CRJ200 and Challenger 650. The branch retains the broad architecture of a single fan stage, fourteen-stage compressor, two-stage high-pressure turbine and four-stage low-pressure turbine. The family originated in technology associated with the military TF34, then developed civil installations and support experience suited to business and airline operators.[2]
Growth to larger regional jets
The CF34-8 moved into the approximately 14,500 lbf thrust class. The -8E powers Embraer E170 and E175 aircraft, while the -8C serves larger CRJ variants. The CF34-10 increased capability again, with versions reaching 20,000 lbf. Its -10E powers the Embraer E190, E195 and Lineage 1000, and the -10A powers COMAC's C909.[2]
Significance of the family
The regional-jet application made engine availability and repeated daily departures central programme concerns. GE's account of the CRJ launch describes the CF34 as helping establish the regional-jet airline market, rather than merely replacing one engine on an existing aircraft. Its later development into larger thrust classes followed the expansion of regional jets into bigger cabins and longer sectors, while the original business-aircraft branch continued alongside them.[1][2]
