GE Aerospace is an American manufacturer of aircraft engines and associated systems, with commercial and military propulsion businesses and extensive engine services. It became a focused public aerospace company in April 2024 following the separation of GE Vernova from General Electric. Its aviation activities themselves extend back to the First World War.[1][2]

From supercharging to jet engines

GE's early aviation work centred on the turbosupercharger developed by Sanford Moss. By using exhaust energy to compress intake air, the equipment addressed the loss of piston-engine performance at altitude. The company's experience with high-temperature rotating machinery subsequently contributed to its selection for American jet-engine development. In 1942, two GE I-A engines powered the Bell XP-59A. The project drew on British jet technology transferred to GE's Lynn facility, forming the starting point for the company's military jet-engine business.[2][3]

Commercial propulsion

The CF6 entered airline service in 1971 and established GE in the commercial widebody market. Later large turbofan families included the GE90, GEnx and GE9X, while the CF34 served regional and business aviation. The commercial portfolio also extends to turboprops and smaller business-aircraft engines. Through CFM International, its equal partnership with Safran Aircraft Engines, GE participates in the CFM56 and LEAP programmes. This combines its independently marketed engine families with joint products developed and supported through a separate international company.[4][5][6]

Military engines and corporate transformation

The F404 illustrates GE's continuing role in military aviation: it powered the F/A-18 Hornet and was selected for the T-7A training aircraft, linking combat-aircraft propulsion with advanced training requirements. Engine support and services accompany production across the company's civil and defence businesses. The 2024 corporate launch followed GE's multi-year restructuring into separate healthcare, energy and aerospace companies. GE Aerospace retained the GE stock-market symbol, with propulsion, aircraft systems and their continuing support becoming the focus of the remaining enterprise.[7][1]
