The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star was an American military jet trainer developed from the F-80 fighter. Its tandem cockpits allowed an instructor to teach a student in a jet aircraft with dual controls. The design also supported reconnaissance, utility and flight-research duties.[1]
From fighter to trainer
Lockheed lengthened the F-80 fuselage by approximately three feet to accommodate the second crew member. The trainer first flew in 1948 as the TF-80C before receiving the T-33 designation. Production continued until 1959, with 5,691 built in the United States.[1]
The conversion retained the Shooting Star's general arrangement while making instruction its central purpose. The T-33 equipped the air forces of more than twenty countries, giving it a substantially wider training career than its original American requirement alone would suggest.[1]
Other operational roles
T-33s also towed targets and directed drones, and some foreign operators employed them in combat. The RT-33 reconnaissance version placed a camera in the nose and replaced the rear cockpit with equipment. These modifications exploited an existing jet airframe for duties beyond the transition training that defined the standard aircraft.[1]
Variable-stability research
A particularly distinctive conversion was the NT-33A, an airborne simulator modified in the late 1950s. Its programmable flight controls could reproduce the handling of other aircraft, while an artificial-feel system simulated their stick and rudder forces. This allowed engineers and pilots to investigate an aircraft's intended behaviour in flight.[2]
Operated and maintained by Calspan and its predecessor, Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, the NT-33A contributed to projects including the X-15, A-10, F-16 and F-22. It also trained military test pilots. Its final research project took place in April 1997, ending approximately forty years of service in this specialised role.[2]
