The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is an American three-engine widebody aircraft developed for medium- and long-range passenger and freight service. Smaller than the contemporary Boeing 747, it placed two engines beneath the wings and a third at the base of the vertical tail. The DC-10 first flew on 29 August 1970, entered scheduled service with American Airlines on 5 August 1971 and formed the basis of the KC-10 tanker, MD-10 flight-deck conversion and McDonnell Douglas MD-11.[1][2]
Development
In the late 1960s American Airlines sought a widebody aircraft smaller than the Boeing 747 that could operate from existing major-airport runways while carrying roughly 250 passengers on domestic trunk routes. Douglas studied several twin- and three-engine layouts before adopting a trijet. Following the 1967 merger of McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft, the programme became the first new commercial transport developed under the McDonnell Douglas name.[2][3]
The prototype made its first flight on 29 August 1970. The FAA certified the initial General Electric CF6-6-powered DC-10-10 on 29 July 1971 under type certificate A22WE. American inaugurated scheduled service between Los Angeles and Chicago on 5 August, with United introducing its aircraft during the same month.[1][4][2]
The Series 10 was optimised for domestic operations. McDonnell Douglas then developed longer-range versions with a larger wing, centre landing gear, increased fuel and higher take-off weights. The CF6-powered DC-10-30 became the principal intercontinental model, while the DC-10-40 used Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines. Factory freighters and convertible passenger/cargo configurations extended the design's commercial roles.[5][6]
Production ended after 386 civil DC-10s. A further 60 KC-10A tanker-transports brought total DC-10-derived production to 446 airframes. The final civil aircraft rolled out in December 1988 and was delivered in 1989; operator transfers and later conversions do not add to this new-build total.[2][7]
Design
Airframe and systems
The DC-10 has a circular-section, twin-aisle fuselage and a swept low wing. Two engines hang beneath the wing; the third is mounted at the base of the fin with a straight intake duct. This differs from the S-shaped intake of the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. A conventional tailplane is mounted low on the aft fuselage.
The aircraft has two four-wheel main landing-gear trucks and a twin-wheel nose gear. Long-range Series 30 and 40 aircraft add a retractable two-wheel centre main gear to support their higher weights. Hydraulic power is distributed through three systems associated with the three engines; flight-control architecture and later safety changes became important subjects in the aircraft's operating history.[6][8]
The original flight deck requires two pilots and a flight engineer. Conventional electromechanical instruments were supplemented over time by navigation, warning and communications upgrades. Individual aircraft differ significantly because of airline modifications, freight conversion and the later MD-10 programme.
Cabin and cargo
The main deck was designed for passenger, freighter or convertible use depending on variant. A typical passenger cabin seated fewer people than the certification maximum, with capacity determined by exits, galley and lavatory positions, seat pitch and class mix. The widebody lower deck accepted standard containers and pallets.
Dedicated freighters have a large main-deck cargo door and reinforced floor. Many passenger aircraft were subsequently converted, so a registration history must distinguish its Boeing/McDonnell Douglas production model from later supplemental modifications.
Variants
DC-10-10 and DC-10-15
The DC-10-10 is the original short- to medium-range model, powered by three General Electric CF6-6 engines. It has the shorter-span wing and no centre main landing gear. The DC-10-15 combined aspects of the Series 10 and 30 for hot-and-high operation, using more powerful CF6-50 engines and the larger wing.[4][6]
Factory and converted freighter suffixes include DC-10-10F. Some Series 10 passenger aircraft were converted for parcel carriers after airline passenger service.
DC-10-30
The DC-10-30 is the principal long-range version. It has increased span, additional fuel, CF6-50 engines and the two-wheel centre landing gear. Subvariants included passenger, convertible and freighter configurations, together with higher-weight and extended-range options.[5][6]
The KDC-10 tanker conversions used former civil Series 30 aircraft. The purpose-built United States Air Force KC-10A also derived from the Series 30 but was a separately configured military tanker-transport, not a standard DC-10-30F.[9]
DC-10-40
The DC-10-40 uses Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines and the long-range wing. Northwest Orient and Japan Air Lines were the principal customers. Engine model, pylon, nacelle and detailed weight standards differ from the CF6-powered Series 30.[6][4]
MD-10
The MD-10 is a Boeing-developed conversion of DC-10-10F and DC-10-30F aircraft for FedEx. It replaces the three-person flight deck with an MD-11-related two-pilot electronic flight deck and introduces associated systems and training changes. The FAA describes it as a major change to the DC-10 type design; it is not a new-build airframe or another 446th-plus production aircraft.[10]

Dimensions and weights varied by subvariant, engine, optional weight package and modification status. The table therefore uses representative airport-planning values, not dispatch data. The approved aircraft flight manual and current weight schedule govern an individual airframe.[5][6][11]
Safety and certification developments
Cargo-door design
An outward-opening aft cargo door failed on American Airlines Flight 96 in 1972, causing rapid decompression and partial cabin-floor collapse. Turkish Airlines Flight 981 was lost near Paris in 1974 after an improperly latched aft cargo door opened; floor collapse damaged control systems. Investigators and regulators identified weaknesses in the latch indication, locking arrangement, pressure relief and implementation of earlier modifications.[12]
The resulting changes included a closed-loop locking modification, improved viewing and indication, and requirements addressing pressure relief and floor survivability. The FAA's later “floors and doors” action extended beyond the DC-10 to other widebody types, making the episode significant to transport-aircraft certification generally.[12]
Flight 191 and the 1979 grounding
On 25 May 1979 the left engine and pylon separated from American Airlines Flight 191 during take-off at Chicago O'Hare, damaging hydraulic lines and causing asymmetric slat retraction. The aircraft rolled out of control, killing all 271 occupants and two people on the ground.[13]
The FAA suspended the DC-10 type certificate in June 1979 while inspections and corrective work were undertaken, then restored it after required actions. The investigation focused on structural damage associated with maintenance procedures as well as warning and stall-protection consequences; it should not be reduced to a generic claim that the type was inherently unsafe.[14][13]
United Airlines Flight 232
In 1989 an uncontained failure of the tail-mounted engine on United Airlines Flight 232 severed all three hydraulic systems. The crew used differential engine thrust to retain partial control and reached Sioux City, Iowa, where the aircraft crash-landed. The accident became an important case in crew resource management, hydraulic-system vulnerability and emergency flight-control research.[8]
Operational history
The DC-10 served a broad range of flag, charter, cargo and leisure airlines. Major passenger operators included American, United, Northwest, Continental, National, Air New Zealand, Japan Air Lines, KLM, Lufthansa, Swissair and Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Freight operators extended the lives of many airframes through main-deck conversion and the MD-10 cockpit upgrade.[7]
Biman announced its final passenger DC-10 flights in 2014. Civil passenger service thereby ended, although converted freighters and special-mission aircraft continued operating. Current status must be checked per registration because the surviving fleet is small and changes through storage, retirement and specialised conversion.[15]
Special roles include aerial firefighting tankers and the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital. The U.S. Air Force retired its last KC-10 in September 2024 after 44 years of service, while that military retirement did not itself end all DC-10-derived civil operation.[16][9]
Legacy
The DC-10 established a large installed base for McDonnell Douglas in widebody operations and freight transport. Its fuselage cross-section, centre-engine arrangement and much of its system architecture carried into the MD-11, which added a stretched fuselage, winglets, new engines and a two-pilot electronic flight deck.
NASA and McDonnell Douglas flight-tested winglets on a DC-10 during the Aircraft Energy Efficiency programme. The combination of winglets and aileron droop demonstrated an estimated three per cent fuel reduction on representative missions, but DC-10 retrofit certification costs prevented fleet adoption. The work informed the winglets used on the MD-11.[17]
