The General Electric F414 is an afterburning turbofan developed for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Its first engine run took place in 1993, and GE records programme service introduction in 1998. The engine occupies the 22,000 lbf thrust class and extends technology associated with the F404 into higher-performance aircraft.[1]
Development approach
The programme originated in a 1991 requirement for increased range and capability in an enlarged Hornet. GE combined the core of its F412 engine with an enhanced low-pressure system. This approach preserved experience from related designs while producing the airflow and thrust needed by the new aircraft. The manufacturer highlights rapid throttle response as a significant operating characteristic.[1]
Aircraft installations
The F414-GE-400 powers both the Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler. A single-engine derivative, the F414G, was selected for the Gripen E/F. The family also expanded to the Korean KF-21 programme, with GE delivering the first F414-GE-400K to Korea Aerospace Industries in May 2020. These installations span carrier aviation and land-based fighter development.[2][1]
Engine characteristics
GE lists a pressure ratio of 30:1 and a thrust-to-weight class of 9:1. The engine is approximately 154 inches long with a maximum diameter of 35 inches. Full-authority digital control manages operation, while materials and cooling improvements support component life. Modular construction is intended to simplify maintenance and preserve practical access to engine sections.[2]
Further development
GE's enhanced-engine work has explored changes that could improve component durability or increase thrust. The manufacturer's technical sheet describes these as development options that can be incorporated into the family, rather than the specification of every production F414. The continuing programme also includes the F414-INS6 selected for India's Light Combat Aircraft Mk2, extending the engine's role in international fighter projects.[2][1]
