The General Electric J47 is an axial-flow turbojet developed from the J35. It first flew in May 1948 in the XF-86 Sabre and became one of the principal American military engines of the early jet age. Its applications ranged from single-engined fighters to large bombers.[1]
Early performance
In September 1948, a J47-powered F-86A set a world speed record of 670.981 mph. The engine subsequently appeared in at least seventeen series, powering aircraft including the F-86, B-36, B-45, B-47, XF-91 and XB-51. A J47-GE-7 also became the first American axial-flow engine approved for commercial use, although military aircraft dominated the programme.[1]
Compressor and turbine
The museum's J47-GE-25 has a twelve-stage axial compressor and single-stage axial turbine. It is rated at 5,670 lbf thrust and weighs 2,707 lb. GE's historical account highlights an anti-icing arrangement that routed heated compressor air through hollow frame struts, addressing the need for operation in adverse weather as jet aircraft entered wider service.[1][2]
Manufacturing scale
GE began production at Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1948 and added capacity at the former Wright Aeronautical plant near Cincinnati. That site became the Evendale facility. Studebaker and Packard also manufactured the engine under licence, while Fiat and Ishikawajima-Harima participated in overseas production. GE records more than 35,000 J47s built before the programme's production run ended.[2]
Industrial legacy
Peak production reached approximately 975 engines per month in 1953–1954. GE introduced methods such as vertical assembly to help maintain compressor-rotor balance during this expansion. The programme established an enduring industrial base for the company's jet-engine business. Operational use outlasted manufacturing by decades, with the Air Force museum tracing the J47's American service to the retirement of the last Air National Guard KC-97J in 1978.[2][1]
